Abandoned Mystery Cabin on Highway 50 - Road Trip Day 8 Episode 16

What is the history behind this place? Could this cabin be a genuine relic of the Old West? Could it be from the 20s or 30s, either a bootlegger’s hideout, an old miner, sheepherder or a Great Depression crash pad? Or maybe the construction is from a more recent era, perhaps by hippies attempting to live off the land?

If anyone knows the answer to the mystery, let me know!

The Best Food in Jail! - The Cellblock Steakhouse in Ely, Nevada, Road Trip Day 7 Episode 15

We walked into a cacophony of electronic bells, fake clanking coins, and real people yelling in glee. Continuing on, we passed through a short corridor and till we were seated at our very own jail cell. The Cellblock Steakhouse is a themed restaurant where you can sit and have your (possibly last) meal.

At the 'Value Voters' summit today, Trump plagiarized Tim Robbins from 25 years ago.

Being a con man by profession, Trump is a thief by nature. But until today, when he stood before the Values Voters summit and said, "Times Have Changed; But You Know What? Now They're Changing Back Again", I didn't realize he had stolen satire. He stole the campaign of Bob Roberts, a fictional character Tim Robbins created for a movie 25 years ago!

The Loneliest Road in America Hwy 50 in Nevada, First Stop Road Trip Day 7 Episode 13

In 1986, a Life Magazine writer declared Highway 50 from Ely to Carson City, Nevada as one of the most remote areas that he had ever driven and declared it to be “The Loneliest Road in America”. To prove that you actively traveled it you must have your guidebook stamped at designated validation stations for Highway 50, part of the route for the original Pony Express. This was a wonderful journey through history for us!

We drove through Wyoming's worst spring snowstorm in 74 years! - Road Trip Day 6 Episode 12

When we left Gillette, Wyoming on our way back to Midvale, Utah, there was already a heavy amount of rain coming down, worse than the day before when rain prevented us from seeing Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Unbeknownst to us, we drove straight into what The Weather Channel would name Winter Storm Valerie. We were driving a car from California with no snow chains, no snow tires, and no four-wheel drive on a bumpy Wyoming highway through a snowstorm that was getting worse by the minute. This video documents our crazy journey!

Tea Pot Dome, Watergate, Trump: Crime, Cover-up and Curious Death Comparisons

Tea Pot Dome, Watergate, Trump: Crime, Cover-up and Curious Death Comparisons

Sunday, September 17, 2017

This is Robert Paulsen standing outside of Teapot Rock in Wyoming. Nearby are the Teapot Dome oil fields that are notorious as the focus of the Teapot Dome scandal during the Harding administration in the 1920s. Though Teapot Dome started as a bribery scandal, like most famous political scandals, it was the cover-up that really made the whole affair explode.

The origins of the Teapot Dome scandal began around 1909 when Navy administrators began converting their fleet from coal powered ships to oil powered ships. As more ships were converted, Navy officials became concerned about the possibility of oil running out (an occurrence many Peak Oil deniers point to as a means of dismissing the notion it could ever happen). The Navy asked Congress to set aside federally owned lands where oil deposits existed for protected reserves that would not be used except during a federal emergency. Two of the three reserves, set aside in 1912, were in Elk Hills and Buena Vista Oil Fields in Kern County, California. The other oil reserve set aside was Teapot Dome in Natrona County, Wyoming in 1915.

The corruption that lead to scandal officially started with newly inaugurated President Warren G. Harding switching responsibility of these oil reserves from Navy to Secretary of Interior through Executive Order 3474 on May 31, 1921. The Secretary of Interior was Harding's poker-playing buddy Albert Bacon Fall, who was a Senator from New Mexico until President Harding appointed him in March 1921. It was Fall who actually wrote the Executive Order that Harding signed. Once these oil fields were under Fall's control, he made secret deals with two powerful oilmen, Harry F. Sinclair of Mammoth Oil, a subsidiary of Sinclair Oil Corporation, and Edward L. Doheny of Pan American Petroleum and Transport Company. Fall leased oil production rights to Doheny for the Elk Hills reserve and Sinclair for Teapot Dome. Though both leases were issued without competitive bids, this was not illegal at the time. What was illegal was the bribes of more than $400,000 that Fall accepted from Doheny and Sinclair for these leases.

When independent oilman and future Democratic Governor of Wyoming Leslie Miller observed Sinclair trucks hauling drilling equipment into Teapot Dome, he was suspicious enough to ask Democratic Senator John B. Kendrick to look into it. On April 15, 1922, Kendrick introduced a resolution calling for an investigation into the deal. The leader of the investigation through the Senate Committee on Public Lands was Republican Senator Robert La Follette. La Follette was a Progressive who would later launch a third party run for President in 1924. Any suspicions La Follette may have had regarding the corruption involved in this deal would only have intensified after the quarters of his Senate Office Building were ransacked.

Mount Rushmore EPIC FAIL - Road Trip Day 5 Episode 11

It was supposed to be one of the highlights of our road trip. Neek, Sar and I were driving up to see the iconic sculptural monument known as Mount Rushmore National Memorial. But what happened when we got there was completely unexpected!

Historic Prairie Berry Winery, South Dakota - Road Trip Day 5 Episode 10

For me, a road trip just isn’t a road trip without a wine tasting!  Neek, Sar and I were not sure what we had in store for us on this excursion.  We’ve tried some unique wines over the years, but wine made from currants?  Rhubarb?  Chokecherries? Strangely enough, this has actually been a winemaking tradition in South Dakota for over 100 years and five generations at Prairie Berry Winery.
