It is certainly very important that police depts reflect the community they serve.

However, there is another very important criteria that needs to be observed in policing our communities. The people we arm and send out to keep us safe should be psychologically capable of handling this responsibility. Many of them are not.

The prolific videos that cell phones have provided show a scary vision of those that are supposed to protect us. Often they do not know the laws they are enforcing and if they do, they can ignore them with impunity. They can shoot and kill innocent people with no consequences. They are answerable only to themselves. This is a recipe for disaster unless we start changing the criteria for whom we hire and stop allowing them to investigate themselves when things go wrong.

I have three old computers, that I do not use any more,

However. the hard drives contain lots of old photo that I would like to keep. Is there anyway that I could just copy the hard drive without fixing up the computers and updating all the many things in windows. I know that sounds almost impossible but I thought it was worth asking.

Curiosity killed the cat

Satisfaction brought it back. There are so many sites available to get this info and it gets really interesting once you get started. I named a few in an earlier post: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=5216462.

I recently received a email from google

telling me that someone had attempted to access my account and if it was not me, I should change my password.

There are better than even odds that it was me because I have a very bad habit of forgetting my password and go through the instructions to reset but forget to write the new number down. Very bad habit I know, but my time honored excuse is that I am very old.

However the email did give the IP address that attempted to enter my google account, and no, it was no, it was not mine. Does any one have suggestions as to how I can track the name of the owner. I have gone to some sites and they tell me some info but I have not been able to locate an actual name. It is not a big deal, but just trying to track it down gives me a little better understanding how the internet works and it is quite entertaining.

As for changing my password, I will do that as soon as I find out what it is. It comes up automatically at the moment so I will be able to change it easily.

Thanks for any advice.

There is a man in our community who is being harrassed by the police,

every made up charge has been dismissed in court and there is not outstanding warrants, charges or anything against him.
however, he was called by the housing commission, went to a meeting which started without him although he was not late.

The cops have pulled him over, searched him without permission and drive by his house and check the perimeter at night with a flashlight, scaring him. He has not led a perfect life, but then neither have I.The only difference is that I was never hassled.

He was called to a housing commission meeting, with no charges of any kind against him except the details of the police resentment charges which were all dropped. At the meeting, he had a folder of rebuttals to any problems that they may bring up.. However, the person chairing the meeting, a member of the city managers office said there was no need for that, they had all the info they needed, possibly supplied by one of his harassers, a city policeman who had taken it upon himself to attend the meeting. They informed him seven days later. by mail, that he had lost his section eight allowances.

He is a neighbor of my daughters, a very nice African American and when she offered him a ride to the store as she saw him walk down the street, a cop car came up and stopped her because her license plates had expired. After sitting in my daughters car for more than 30 minutes while they dealt with my daughters expired tags. he got tired of waiting and decided to walk home. The cops left my daughter and her expired tags. chased after him and eventually hand cuffed him for a couple of hours with any charges an eventual let him go, but have continued to hassle him.

He is very well read on rights and the many illegal activities of the police, but I wondered if anyone had any more ideas. He has contacted a legal aid group and has been able to get an hour consultation at a very reasonable cost but I wondered
there were more ideas any one could add.

John Kerry was very clear about his feelings toward Edward Snowden today.

He called him a coward, suggesting that he should man up and come home. While I have mixed feelings about what Snowden did, he was certainly no coward.

Our previous president is a war criminal. His lies caused the death of hundred of thousands of innocent people and a refugee problem that left millions homeless. If Kerry had suggested we treat him like the monster he is and make him pay for all the carnage he knowingly left behind, I do not remember him speaking up. But when someone exposes this country's dirty laundry, he finds his voice. That sounds like a coward to me.

I was in the middle of watching the press conference at the White House

when something came up and I put the show on pause. About an hour later I went back to hear the rest of the press conference. The frozen picture on my TV set suddenly gave me a feeling of hope that I have not had about the state of world affairs for a long time.

There were two of the world's most powerful leaders, their faces frozen in time (well at least an hour), and it suddenly gave me a feeling of hope for our future. The two powerful leaders were a female prime minister and and African American male President. This in itself does not mean that all is well with the world, but at least it shows that we (the world community) can change if we just manage to keep electing the right people for the job.

I am not very knowledgeable about the different groups that make up the Islam religion.

I do know that the largest groups are the Shia and Sunni. What I do not understand is the hatred that seems to divide them,

I can think of the same type of animosity between catholics and protestants which has also been very violent, Why do these groups, the sunni and shia, hate each other so much and does anyone see an end to the violence.

I was very disappointed when I read this article

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2013/dec/07/secret-memo-blairites-labour-election-alastair-campbell-alan-milburn-ed-miliband

However I am not as up to date on UK politics as many other members of DU and would be interested in any comments.

I have not seen the video but I read the statement a little differently.

I took it to mean that any innocent young black male could be the victim of such violence merely because of the color of his skin. It is the same feeling I got when I heard about the plane that crashed in SFO. My son had flown in to that airport from Seoul a few days earlier and I literally felt sick knowing that had that happened three days earlier he would have been in danger.

If Zimmerman racially profiled Trayvon before killing him and then was literally given a "get out of jail free" card because his victim was a young black male wearing a hoodie, then it makes sense for all black males to think "yes, that could have been me". The state of Florid has (IMHO) just legalized the right to kill any black citizen, because they are black. What happened to that blindfolded lady with the scales, symbolizing that we live in a country where justice is blind.

If anyone has any doubts about how this law disproportionally affects blacks, look at what happened to Marissa Alexander of Jacksonville, when she fired a warning shot to get an abusive spouse to leave her property. She did not even aim the gun at him but she got twenty years in jail. She was a young black female with no criminal record dealing with an abusive husband and unless I am missing some important details, why was she not protected by this law.

The moral of this saga, at least to me, is if you are black and live in Florida, be afraid, be very afraid. You are living in a state that has legalized year round hunting season on all black people with just one caveat, it cannot be used as a defense by the any black people.
