Thoughts on What Education "Reform" Has Achieved

Teaching people to be academics guided and encouraged people to engage in analysis and be capable of independent thought. It was replaced with rote "learning" to ensure you were a good little worker bee who never asks questions, even if you could figure out what the questions actually were.

Humanities were eliminated because humanities put you in touch with the human part of you. They put you in touch with your heart and if you have heart you may have empathy and develop a social consciousness. This is a dangerous path because you might not be able to blindy hate the (fill-in-the-blank).

Civics was eliminated because it was important that you are unaware of your rights or what was being done to you.

Just some musings this Saturday morning.

Edited for the correct spelling of "achieved" in the thread title about education.

Should DU send something in rememberance of MFM?

A donation to a charity/cause? Flowers?

He was such a huge presence on DU, I just feel we should do something.

Any suggestions?

EDA: I only interacted with him a couple of times and I know he had a lot of friends here on DU. Anyone know if he was into any kind of causes/charities?

California Attorney General: Legalizing Marijuana Would Save Hundreds Of Millions Of Dollars A Year

If a proposed ballot measure succeeds, California may become the third state to legalize marijuana for recreational purposes. By the state’s estimate, legalization would save the state hundreds of millions of dollars each year and generate about the same amount in new tax revenue.

Attorney General Kamala Harris’ office released a summary of the proposed ballot measure on Christmas Eve, breaking down the costs incurred by law enforcement, court proceedings, and prison maintenance. The Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance found that legalization would result in “reduced costs in the low hundreds of millions of dollars annually to state and local governments related to enforcing certain marijuana-related offenses, handling the related criminal cases in the court system, and incarcerating and supervising certain marijuana offenders.”

Newly legalized production and sale of marijuana would also rake in “net additional tax revenues in the low hundreds of millions of dollars annually.”

These fiscal benefits would undoubtedly be a boon to California, which has struggled with a massive deficit, a flailing public school system, and an overcrowded prison crisis. Drug offenders make up 31 percent of inmates in the state, and each inmate costs taxpayers about $47,000 per year.

Our illustrious County Board of Supervisors just voted to ban outdoor cultivation for the unincorporated areas. That's to match the ban in the rest of the city. This would, hopefully, settle all that.

Butternut Squash Soup

I think I've posted this here before but just in case, this is a great recipe, very tasty, very cheap and great for cold winter days.

Butternut Squash Soup

Ingredients:
1 (2 to 3 pounds) butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut into 1-inch chunks
2 Tbsp unsalted butter
1 medium onion
6 cups chicken stock (veggie stock is fine)
Nutmeg
Salt and freshly-ground pepper

Directions:
In large pot, melt butter. Add onion and cook until translucent, about 8 minutes. Add squash and stock. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until squash is tender, about 15 to 20 minutes. Remove squash chunks with slotted spoon and place in blender and puree (you'll have to add liquid from the soup to keep the blender blades moving). Return blended squash to pot. Stir and season with nutmeg and cook on a simmer for about 30 minutes.

Need help with a feral kitten I'm fostering.

So, we're having Thanksgiving dinner and I look out on the patio and there's this white, long-hair furball, maybe about 7 or 8 weeks old, GORGING herself on my outside cats' cat food. This tells me she's starving. I tried to go out to the patio to ascertain if she was wild or not, she is. Since I can't bring her in without trapping her (something I never do unless there's a medical emergency) but I'm watching her in the back yard for a couple of days and notice she's made friends with one of my 6 cats -- Erica. At one point, Erica sort of goes and gets her and leads her to the sliding glass door which leads into our family room. I opened the door and in she comes. I closed the door and have had her in ever since.

After 2 or 3 days she sees we're not going to reach for her or try to coerce her so she's comfortable sleeping on the futon and the chair and the table and on my desk -- out in the open. She's still following Erica around like they are Besties. Erica is tolerating her, even bathing her, but Alaska (we named her) is FULL of fleas and too young to treat yet (she's getting there) so it's understandable that Erica is not wanting to be too close to her.

ANYWAY . . . anytime I try to come up to her, including on her level, and very gently, she dives under something. I've been able to pick her up a few times but only when she was unsuspecting and she doesn't seem to want to stay in my lap even though she purrs loudly when I actually get her there.

I know her instinct is to dive under something when she's afraid but I need to be able to touch her at will so she doesn't freak out every time. As I said, I'm FOSTERING her (I already have 6 cats) and it's important that she be able to be handled in order to be adoptable.

I'm taking her to the vet on Tuesday to get her shots, an estimate of how old she is and maybe get her de-flead if she's old enough. I'll get her spayed as soon as it's medically possible.

This is my question: How do I get her to allow me to pet her/touch her/hold her without her freaking out?

Btw, she's solid white except for a black "skid mark" on her head and she's got one green eye and one blue eye. Cutest damned thing I ever saw.

Local, family-owned, green, hormone-free milk.

This is Rosa Family farms

http://rosabrothers.com/

They're in Hanford, CA (just SE of Fresno) they've been family owned since 1953. They're green, they're humane, they don't feed their cows hormones, and they're completely transparent (you can tour the facilities). Yes, the milk is more expensive but given the pluses, I think it's worth it.

The milk comes in old-fashioned glass bottles. You pay a $2.00 deposit on the first bottle. When you go to buy more milk, just bring the old, rinsed-out bottle back so the deposit is a one-time thing. They offer lots of different types of milk (chocolate milk, orange crème, root beer milk) and it's all VERY fresh.

I've no financial interest in the company but I just think it's a good idea to try and buy local as much as possible. There's a list of places where it's sold on the website. Mostly at Save Mart and mostly in the San Joaquin Valley and Central Coast. You can also have it delivered.

Just an FYI.

Cheers for Obama,

jeers for G.W. Did anyone else catch that? There was a HUGE response when they showed President Obama on the big screen. JEERS when they showed W. I enjoyed that.
