http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/bernie-sanders-undergoes-surgery-dc-hospital/story?id=35495545"Sen. Bernie Sanders chose to undergo an outpatient hernia repair surgery at George Washington Hospital in Washington, D.C., today, according to a statement from his Senate office.
Campaign staff told ABC News that the 74-year-old Vermont senator was not feeling well this past weekend in New Hampshire, and on Sunday the Senator elected not to come by a rally with supporters in Manchester ahead of the state Democratic partys annual Jefferson-Jackson dinner there.
Michael Briggs, a spokesperson for the Vermont senators presidential campaign, told ABC News that he does not think the procedure will impact Sanders's campaign schedule and that the senator is still planning to travel back to New Hampshire for more events this weekend.
"Sanders has maintained a grueling campaign schedule with coast-to-coast travel since announcing his presidential bid last May," Briggs said. "He faithfully travels back to Washington, D.C., for his Senate duties as well. He has been asked several times on the trail about his age and the toll of a presidential race and often answers that he has so far been blessed with good health."
The Sanders campaign told ABC News that the procedure already took place and he is in recovery now, and his wife Jane is with him. The campaign also confirmed that Sanders will return home from the hospital later today."

(13,133 posts)and it will take only a couple weeks to be able to get around well. Right away they also need you walk around to get things moving around down there. The biggest trick is just finding a good surgeon to do it ( I'm sure the Senator probably got one of the better ones )
Btw., my experiences are having three of them repaired

(18,791 posts)First, I hope it went smoothly for Bernie and that he recuperates well.
Second, I had 2 done at the same time...one right side and one on the left. The left side was fine but I don't know what the hell he did on the right but it was like someone was gutting me with a butcher knife...horrifically painful. When I complained at the follow up, he shrugged and said to give it a couple more weeks...arghhh. It took months for that pain to go away.
Worst thing I've ever had done...or at least the way it was done. Mine were not done by scope.

(13,133 posts)Which happens when those two larger muscles that run vertically down your mid to lower abdomen open up space between them. Not a common one and was much worse than the others. With that one they literally do some kind of thing to make sure plenty of scar tissue grows in. This so it doesn't reoccur and believe me you wouldn't want that in any case. With that one, it took about eight weeks to heal up enough to be able to go back to work and at least three weeks before i could get around much.
The others, just a couple years ago, was probably like yours, an inguinal on both sides. The doctor said they could have of been done in one session but the doctor also said better outcomes are usually when they are done separately. This when one being done a month or so after the other one has a chance to heal. Which also makes you much less ambulatory btw. No laparoscopic also for me. The doctor said they wouldn't be able to blow me up like a balloon for the laparoscopic because of scar tissue in the ventral hernia.
Also i didn't have much pain because with inguinal's because the doctor would cut the small nerve cord in that area rather than go around it. It leaves you with a minor non-sensitive part around groin area but mostly is unnoticeable and makes for a lot less complications. The ventral, much more painful and still has a much larger numb around the area.
A one sided inguinal with laparoscopic sounds like a piece of cake. Bernie should be well in no time

(11,366 posts)I couldn't move for the first week after mine. Not sure what kind he had -mine was umbilical from being small and having huge children - I'm sure that's not an issue with him. LOL. But men can get umbilical hernias.
Anyone know what kind?
