1. All you have to do is post the URL to the image

Below is an example of what I'm talking about... however, in order to make the image show up, you'd also need the http:// in front of the url (can't put it here because then the image will show up instead of the code).

michaelkonik.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/president-obama-kid.jpg <== This with the http:// looks like the below:

If you have an image that you've saved, that gets more complicated. You need to upload it to someplace that hosts images... I like this site, copy the URL the site gives you for sharing in email (it should look like the link above with the http://)

2. If trying to post a picture from your own hard drive, it has to be uploaded to a hosting site...

Like photobucket or the like. Once done you merely copy and past the URL for the image into your post.

Ditto if you are trying to embed a picture taken from elsewhere on the internet. Copy and paste the IMAGE URL from where it appears.

3. Go to a photo sharing website like photobucket. Upload photos from your file. Click on the photo.

copy the ...... link. Post the link in the body of the text on DU.

4. If you want to show an image that is already on the Internet . . . .

. . . . and copy the image location (not the image itself). Then paste that location url into your post. That's all there is to it.

5. The image needs to be the right format and needs to be on the internet.

DU3 will automatically display an image if you put its web address in a post - as long as it has one of the following file extensions: gif, jpg, jpeg, png.

If the image is on the web somewhere, you should be able to get the address by right-clicking (or ctrl-clicking for some Apple users) and selecting 'Copy Image Location' (or 'Copy Image Address', or whatever is equivalent for your browser) and then right-clicking and pasting (or use ctrl-V to paste) that address into your DU post. The address should basically look like these:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/imgs/logo-du3-150x48.gif

http://www.democraticunderground.com/apple-touch-icon-114x114-precomposed.png

http://upload.democraticunderground.com/imgs/home/120524-obama-calls-romney-speech-a-cowpie-of-distortion.jpg

Note the file extensions in the examples above are gif, png, and jpg. If you copy and paste one of those addresses into a post, it should display the image.

As noted in the other responses, if the image is on a computer and not accessible via the internet then you need to upload the image from the computer to a image server or other website. There are quite a few free image servers to choose from - I primarily use photobucket (account required), but have also used imgur (no account required).

To successfully get an image to show up in your post there are numerous steps that can differ significantly depending on what operating system and browser you are using - and also depending on where the original image is located. If you are still have issues after reading the responses in this thread, you might have to tell people where you seem to be getting stuck and some general information about the image in question and the operating system/browser you are using.

The good news is that once you figure it out, it will be easy to do the next time.

Good luck,
Make7
