My mother is cleaning out her house
to get some much needed work done on her foundation.
We've had to go through many, many old pictures and things. In this mess I saw an old "friendship" book signed by all my grandmothers friends back in 1922. One of the messages that made me chuckle was : "if your husband is cross, pick up a chair and show him who's boss" And another " Don't go and marry, a bachelors club is more MERRY" I thought to myself... wow! Back then in 1922 the women were bucking the norm! I love it! Made me think about my grandma! She was a LEADER!

6. I do not know too much about my family history either.
|
One set of grandparents came from Italy and I never really liked them very much. So it is hard to generate any enthusiasm about finding out about them and my other grandparents were Welsh with a very common Welsh name which would be impossible to trace because my dad is dead and we have not been able to contact any of his family.
But I know it must have been great fun reading from the past and your grandmother sounds like a real cool person. We need more of these woman around today. |

7. I think that if you take into context the total lack of legal rights for woman
|
when this took place, it would be very hard to come to that conclusion. Women had only recently won the right to vote they were not supposed to work outside the home and there was no such thing as spousal rape. Do you really thing that a joke about men in those times was inappropriate.

seen the word 'misandry' used so often as I have in my short month or so here at Democratic Underground. It keeps popping up in various posts, in the absence of any actual misandry, and I'm really puzzled by its usage.

10. It's a tactic popular in the mens rights movement to "equalize" sexism.
|
It's the same tactic used by freeper types who point out that black people complaining about racism is racist in and of itself against white people ,it's like claiming The New Black Panthers are representative of the civil rights movement,in other words, exaggerate a small group of extremists to muddy a whole movement.I'm sure there are a small amount of women who are truly misandrist, but they pale in comparison to the staggering amount of sexism in common culture.

11. It's the false equivalency that bewilders me.
|
While I'm sure there is a subset of women who hate men, it's nowhere near the reverse, and it's certainly not been codifed and institutionalized to the extent that misogyny has been. So what is the payoff for people to pretend otherwise? I really don't get it.

13. It's an attempt to define feminism in their terms.
|
Kind of like southerners who call the Civil War "The War For States Rights". It's also an attempt to define "good feminists" vs. "bad feminists". The good feminists are the ones who don't make them uncomfortable.

|
I was just puzzled about why, on this website, there are so many accusations of misandry. I would expect it elsewhere, but it seems that Democraticy Underground isn't very woman-friendly from what I can tell.
