you're threatening to not vote if your preferred candidate isn't on the ballot?
How....privileged.
By the way, f**k you Daniel Holtzclaw.

(25,699 posts)So you're gonna see a lot of the same people replying to you. And your post is execrable, you are exploiting the rape of women, and the murder of men, women and children, to make a grandstanding point about people you argue with on the internet.

(50,254 posts)They pushed the Democratic Party to become indistinguishable on "law and order" i.e., to be cool with whatever the hell the cops wanted to do, especially with PoC). Her comments on the killing of Amadou Diallo, while appropriate, were way late in the game.
Agree with you on Holtzclaw...as does everybody here, I assume.
JaneyVee
(19,877 posts)Now you're way off topic. This may be an inconvenient truth for you, but guess who was pushing the hardest for more policing? The congressional black caucus. No one wanted to live in high crime areas. Mayors and community leaders said "enough".
Ken Burch
(50,254 posts)It's not as though the ONLY possible way to fight crime was to bust people in poor neighborhoods and neighborhoods of color for trivial offenses like loitering, or to rough up EVERYBODY at the crime scenes, even the witnesses and at times the victims(as was happening in cities like Baltimore).
Or to use "kill first, ask questions later" engagement policies like the won used to justify the murder of a twelve year old in Cleveland.
You can fight crime and respect people's rights, can still give everybody the presumption of innocence.
The fight for drug legalization comes, at least in part, out of the realization that much of the crime, and much of the criminal response to those crimes, came out of the "drug war" that our party aided and abetter out of cowardice. If we had done what we should have done and treated drugs as a social issue, rather than a domestic military intervention, BLM would probably not have to exist(and, among other things, Gore would have carried not only Florida but his own home state.
This happens over and over...some sort of "law and order" fever takes place, everybody in politics is too gutless to stand up to it, a lot of people who did nothing really all that wrong get harassed, beaten, falsely arrested, or killed...and then, twenty years later, a few lame apologies are made when it's too late to matter. Embalm, bury, repeat.
JaneyVee
(19,877 posts)It was in response to the remarkably high violent crime rates of the 90s. And now we find ourselves today desperately needing criminal justice reform. Which won't happen under a President Trump. This op is not about the primaries, it is about the privileged ones who threaten not to vote if their preferred nominee is not on the ballot. The most heart-wrenching testimony of the victims was where they didn't come forward because they didn't believe they would be believed because they were Black women accusing a white cop.

(28,270 posts)for anyone that calls him or herself a democrat, progressive, leftist, or independent and would sit by and allow a fascist republican to take the reins of power over this country for the next eight years.
People that would do this are worse than the republicans they claim to be against. At least the fucking republicans lay out exactly who and what they are so you know they are evil bastards.
The progressive that claims to care about social justice, PoC, out of control police, a living wage, women's rights, etc and sits at home and helps republicans get elected is the lowest POS on the face of the earth to me.
I will gladly vote for Bernie Sanders should he win the nomination and I would even contribute what little money I could spare to his campaign, and I would urge everyone I know to vote for him.
Anyone on this board that promises to never vote for the democratic nominee for president should be insta banned outta here for life IMO!
They are de facto fascist fucking REPUBLICANS and should be treated as such!

(16,685 posts)You folks drop your social justice concerns for whatever political attacks are expedient and then pick them right back up again in earnest. I would think that would be exhausting.

(45,319 posts)Here is an example, a thread in which she says she won't vote for the nominee unless it is her choice of nominees over and over gain and you, Janey, are right there with her, not at all critical of her anti nominee stance:
"Bernie supporters are a big reason I will never support Bernie."

She's already on a time out, and that really should be enough for you, no reason to attack her endlessly like this.
Plus, the verbiage you use is exploitative of crime victims. Not really worth it just to take a swipe at posters like MaggieD.

It doesn't matter who they support in the primaries.
If they sit out, they are de facto republicans.

(45,319 posts)I'm not into this double standard bit. If you mean what you say, then let your actions demonstrate that in the future in a consistent and honestly brokered fashion.

(28,270 posts)It's a must to keep republicans out of the white house.
We fight each other now in the primaries but in the general....get behind the candidate 100% or get the hell out of here and join freakrepublic IMO.

I'd expect most DUers to get off their butts and vote, even if it's for the lesser of two evils. Because we care enough to register at DU.
Ignoring the vote is not just for the privileged.
