2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBefore the General Election
we have got to get all of this crap hashed out.
If you tell blatant lies, you must understand that it is part of the vetting process to expose them.
Nobody wants to get blindsided by a candidate that can be demonstrably shown as a liar and a hypocrite.
Deal with it. You can gloss over some things, but there are things that you cannot gloss over.
Stolen Valor, attempts at it and another attempt at it the day before Veteran's day will not be forgotten.
I am actually surprised by how many people here on DU do not understand how serious it is to do so, how disgusting it is, and how you can possibly believe that you can cover that shit with a new coat of paint.
DO NOT UNDERSTAND.
There are the caps.

(39,961 posts)Clearly it is from someone I have on ignore for good reason.
Go ahead and defend this. I won't see it, and furthermore, there is no way I could see it as defensible.
This is her second attempt at Stolen Valor - bullets in Serbia, and now "I tried to join the Marines a month after I got married but got turned away because I was (lied about age) a graduate of Yale with my J.D.".
If you were trying to write some fanfiction about Hillary Clinton, that might somehow be retconned in. But realistically speaking, in 1975, they were desperate for JAG officers due to the atrocities that many Marines were charged with.
Brush up on your history.

(11,785 posts)But you're right, stolen valor is something that isn't lightly dismissed or soon forgotten.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)And apparently they have some idea in their mind that every single person in the military is a grunt, is dumb, and that there is no need for officers for JAG skills.
It's really difficult for me to understand how folks can be so cut off from the people that are around them and serve in the military, yet wave flags like they are doing something.

(11,785 posts)If you don't get how "I was going to sign up, but..." isn't first cousin to "I did X", then sheesh.

(15,429 posts)Their candidate certainly isn't providing any excitement.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)"faux" about it, you are in the wrong place at the wrong time.
You are seriously asking this?
In retrospect, I see no reason to continue to reply to you.

(5,279 posts)Excerpt from William Shakespear's Henry V (1599). Saint Crispin's day speech.
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he neer so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accursd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispins day.
The heroes were the ones who died screaming in the mud. The arms, legs, eyes, and childhoods burned off some of us. I am not a hero. Don't thank me. I was just a witness at a distance.
Goodnight, I need a drink.

(5,279 posts)Veteran's day makes me morbid.
I do not get drunk on Veteran's day, not in many years. 1, 4oz glass of Jameson Irish Whiskey served in a dimly lit room has been my prescription for V'sD for 3 years now. I better the next day. A little grumpy perhaps, but better.
My behavior baffles me. I know it isn't PTSD; no reason for that. Just something about the currently acceptable way of "celebrating" V'sD just infuriates me.

(14,177 posts)many of my family members have been in wars or the military during peace times. So, this much I know the scars last forever even if they didn't get physically wounded, they have seen things they can never forget. My nephew lost a good friend in his convoy when his friends vehicle that was right behind him was blown up by an IED.
I absolutely despise people who lie about their service. I think this is a whopper and I will not forget about it.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS
Poster claims HRC is guilty of Stolen Valor. The phrase Stolen Valor has a specific meaning: SVis when someone who did not serve claims to have been in the military, boasts of his wartime heroism, wears stolen Medal of Honor, Purple Hearts, etc for profit. Aerows thread is a reaction to a thread about a story HRC told about going to see a Marine Recruiter to join up. That is not Stolen Valor. Cheapens the term and is OTT smear
