One of Bernie's strengths little recognized: he comes from a rural state

This would help Bernie in the general election to grab Republican / rural votes, because rural people are often bitter about urbanites and see the Democratic Party as largely an urban party. If they see Bernie as someone from a rural state that cares about rural issues as well, that could sway at least some of them that aren't devoted to the religious right.

Which is seen as a hotbed of rich people and leftist activism. Claiming Vermont is rural will do nothing to help him with other rural areas of the country.
