(17,505 posts)So far? Answerable. In the future? How could I possibly know that?
Seriously?

(14,733 posts)Me, I don't expect to make it too much longer, so I voted true.
LiberalArkie
(15,686 posts)seems to be a reasonable candidate for the Republicans. I must be slipping away fast.

(14,733 posts)I don't expect to make it anywhere near that far. I just want stick around long enough that my other beagle can pass with my arms around her like her companion did when his time came. None of us should go out alone.
LiberalArkie
(15,686 posts)vertigo attack. Scared both of us. I did not expect to make this far and the docs scare me. They keep saying I am as healthy as any normal 50 year old man. God I don't want to live to the point of being old and drooling. ;>

(16,916 posts)I'm counting in Bernie to usher in the millennial revolution, but who knows what's right around the corner?

(2,485 posts)The question requires an interaction with your future, but only to vote for or against yourself.

(6,568 posts)I mean, the New Deal was great, and his economic policies were pretty spot on. However, internment of Japanese-Americans is pretty fucking unforgivable. I wouldn't expect Bernie to pull that kind of shit.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)perfect, but he would not make those kinds of compromises ever.

(72,631 posts)I know I would.

(6,568 posts)it's not FDR?
I think Bernie is great. I think Hillary is great. However Bernie and Hillary have more in common than Bernie and FDR. I think trying to equate any modern presidential candidate with FDR is an exercise in futility. It was a vastly different time and place, and Sanders and FDR are VASTLY different candidates because of such.

(14,177 posts)He was dictator lite, in that he didn't kill near as many people as the other guy. But, rounding up people just because of their countries of origin is plain wrong and it's disgusting. He also had some Germans (mostly single men) and Italians (not sure the demographic make up of this group) rounded up and they were put in different camps separated from their families, but the camps were somewhat nicer than the Japanese camps.

(14,449 posts)Majorities in both chambers. But even if he does, FDR didn't have to deal with today's GOP at all. Not even close.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)He has too much integrity to ever stand for that as President. I would vote Bernie over FDR.
MADem
(135,425 posts)through a very challenging economic period and the worst war known to modern humankind. He was not "universally beloved" particularly before the war. People who hated him, hated him rather enthusiastically. Many found him autocratic (Court packing...? Imagine Bush trying to pull that stunt! Imagine SANDERS trying to sell it...!).
He directed the creation of the atomic bomb, he incarcerated Japanese people for the crime of their ethnicity without any due process, did the same (albeit on a much smaller scale) to some German and Italian Americans, and he kicked the can down the road when it came to starting to address issues of equality and desegregation with the black community. Ironically, his 'raised racist' VP was the one who started the ball rolling with the desegregation of the Armed Forces.
FDR's term was shaped by grave challenges. Not sure if anyone would have liked him at all if he'd exhibited those same "My way or the highway" prerogatives in a mellow, peacetime environment with a more robust economy.

(46,924 posts)similar things as FDR. I think it takes more political skill and smarts than Bernie has demonstrated at this point.

(55,981 posts)and Clinton trying to smear him as such is childish, and I think most Americans will see thru the subterfuge.
FDR helped the 99% get back on their feet and that's what Sanders does. It is a stark contrast to Clinton that believes that a healthy Wall Street is more important than helping the 16,000,000 children living in poverty. No one will mistake her for a FDR Democrat.

(4,879 posts)But I think Bernie is better. he has a natural empathy that comes through in his policy stances.
Unlike a poster above, I think he is plenty smart enough.

(961 posts)I hear this crap all the time.
The D's say "Oh, we need another president like an FDR." The R's say "Oh, we need another president like Reagan." What's the point in this? Nothing, absolutely nothing.
FDR is dead. He was a man of his time; nothing more. There will never be another close. He isn't going to rise from the dead anytime soon. Bernie is Bernie. Hillary is Hillary. Take it or leave it.
