GOP Source: Officials Looking To Replace Akin

Republicans in Missouri and Republican Party officials are looking for a replacement for Rep. Todd Akin, a Republican source in Missouri tells TPM. "The walls are quickly collapsing," the source said. "No one in Missouri is standing by Akin." The source said that Akin, who has said he is staying in the race, is currently at the Ohio office of Republican media strategist Rex Elsass.

The source said that GOP officials are considering Jim Talent, State Auditor Tom Schweich and John Brunner, who came in second behind Akin in the Republican primary.

"Republicans need Todd Akin to withdraw immediately," the source said.

If Akin drops out the teabaggers will demand Steelman, I see a major war brewing within the MO GOP. Even if Akin does drop out McCaskill has a much better shot at this seat than she did yesterday.

It's weird the way the timing of things in life works, isn't it? If he had just waited until tomorrow to say it, it would have been too late.

Still, just because they are looking to replace him, doesn't mean they will be able to force him out. He could still hang on.

replacing Akin be seen as them subverting the will of those primary voters that elected him to proceed to the general election?

That is the Democratic frame for his being replaced or forced out of running in the general election.

Betcha he'll retire from the House, too, or just get voted out in November...so that's good...

...we had two initiative acts, voted in by a majority of the voters, that were overridden by the GOP-dominated legislature in the next year. They don't give a rat's ass that our state motto is "the will of the people shall be the supreme law." They vote their own selfish interests, and to hell with what the majority of the people say they want. They're idiotic tinpot tyrants, behloden to Koch brothers and Rex Sinquefield and whoever else throws money at them. I call 'em foreskin--not really man enough to be full dicks.

The Missouri Republicans nominated this piece of trash fair and square. Let him run!

Before he let down his guard and showed his true face, he was the darling of the Republican Party. The fact that he has shown his true face to the country does not change the fact that he is the same guy that appealed to the Republicans of his state over all others. He wasn't reticent about displaying who he was in the primaries, and he won, fair and square. Akin IS the man the Missouri Republicans want to run against Claire McCaskill. So let him.

Let Missouri and the country see the real face of the teabaggers and their Republican overlords--and then choose between them and us. Akin should stay on as their nominee.*

*I'm not totally divorced from reality--I realize he'll probably be gone within 24-48 hours, but as he is the most honest version of the Republican Party out there who has actually let his hair down in public, I just wish he'd be their standard bearer for as long as he can hold out.
