Todd Akin (R-MO) Says Rape Victims Can 'Shut Down' Pregnancies

No, really:

This morning, Akin told the anchor of the Jaco Report that, from what he "understands from doctors" (which doctors, he does not say), that assuming we are talking about "cases of legitimate rape" the "female body has a way of shutting that down" (i.e. preventing pregnancy).

So ladies, according to Mr. Akin, if you are raped, you not only have to prove to Mr. Akin that your rape was "legitimate," you also are at fault for allowing yourself to become pregnant.

1. You really have to be an idiot to be a republican!

How greedy or bigoted do you have to be to affiliate yourself with this bizarre and disturbingly ignorant group of people?

Any woman who votes for a republican must be certifiably insane!

This idiot is running on this crap! He is actually telling women before an election that if they get pregnant as a result of a rape that they were really just playing hard to get!

What kind of a moron would vote for this jackass?

43. I think the poster failed to understand the difference between viable sperm and non consensual sperm

picking up on key words such as 'reservoir' and repeating without context.
http://humupd.oxfordjournals.org/content/12/1/23.long

At coitus, human sperm are deposited into the anterior vagina, where, to avoid vaginal acid and immune responses, they quickly contact cervical mucus and enter the cervix. Cervical mucus filters out sperm with poor morphology and motility and as such only a minority of ejaculated sperm actually enter the cervix. In the uterus, muscular contractions may enhance passage of sperm through the uterine cavity. A few thousand sperm swim through the uterotubal junctions to reach the Fallopian tubes (uterine tubes, oviducts) where sperm are stored in a reservoir, or at least maintained in a fertile state, by interacting with endosalpingeal (oviductal) epithelium. As the time of ovulation approaches, sperm become capacitated and hyperactivated, which enables them to proceed towards the tubal ampulla. Sperm may be guided to the oocyte by a combination of thermotaxis and chemotaxis. Motility hyperactivation assists sperm in penetrating mucus in the tubes and the cumulus oophorus and zona pellucida of the oocyte, so that they may finally fuse with the oocyte plasma membrane. Knowledge of the biology of sperm transport can inspire improvements in artificial insemination, IVF, the diagnosis of infertility and the development of contraceptives.

12. McCaskill needs to get a coalition together

And yet, because McCaskill is the most vulnerable Democratic Senator this year, this guy has a good chance of getting elected!

McCaskill needs to take this opportunity to get a coalition together of Democrats, Independents, and moderate Republican women in Missouri so they realize they need to vote for her instead of this guy.

This is how Bennett narrowly beat Buck in Colorado in 2010, and she needs to do the same thing.

21. Lessons from Bennet vs. Buck

Here's my suggestion to the McCaskill campaign as to how to win the women's vote by large numbers the way Bennet did:

Liberal third party groups called Buck extremist. Bennet focused on attacking Buckís views on abortion, which he believed should be banned including those of cases of rape and incest. He was also attacked for wanting to eliminate the 17th Amendment and refusing to prosecute an alleged rapist as Weld County district attorney. Planned Parenthood mounted a mail campaign, targeting women voters with the warning that "Colorado women canít trust Ken Buck." Bennet won the women vote by 17 points according to exit polls. After the election, Buck conceded to the Denver Post that the main reason why he lost is because of social issues.

for this.

It opens up a line of attack for Obama folks against the Ryan RawMoney campaign.

You're not thinking ahead. This is big, and YES, women get to vote in Missouri.

I think Akin just secured the seat for another 6 years for Claire.

Missouri DOES have colleges, universities, schools that teach facts of life to high school kids.

Missouri has some good Democrats in the past. It's not Mississippi or Alaska, where there have been only one or two ever.

26. The key issue is whether Akin stays in

Nate Silver says that IF Akin stays in the race, he now gives McCaskill good odds of winning, but there's some talk he may drop out:

https://twitter.com/fivethirtyeight

Calling McCaskill a 2:1 favorite prices in some chance that Akin will drop out. I'd take her side of those odds if he stays in.

Have to wait for polls, but on instinct I'd call McCaskill a 2:1 favorite in #MOSEN now. Had as toss-up tilting GOP before Akin remarks.

32. Anti-abortion ploy

By his definition, if the rape was "legitimate" then no pregnancy

But if pregnant then it wasn't really rape and doesn't count under any abortions "in cases of rape or incest" rules.

NEWSFLASH:

Akin co-sponsored a bill last year to define "forcible rape" in an anti-abortion ploy.
His co-sponsor?

Paul Ryan.
