2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie Sanders Leads the Way on Major Issues. Hillary Follows His Lead!
On Citizens United:Hillary later announces that she opposes Citizens United. However she takes advantage of it by accepting huge donations now possible BECAUSE of Citizens United. Hillary gets on board with Bernie later to also state she will not appoint any SC who do not oppose CU.
On the Keystone Pipeline:
Hillary initially says she will let her position be known to us AFTER the election on the Keystone Pipeline. However she has since changed her mind and joined Bernie stating that she too is now opposed to the Keystone Pipeline.
On the TPP:
Hillary was a proponent of this deal going back to her tenure as Secretary of State. However, just today we have heard that she is again following Bernie's example, or at least sending out signals that she is no longer 100% behind it, but will make a final determination after she sees the text.
Bernie has seen the leaks, doesn't want Global Corps writing or influencing our legislation, wants Trade Agreements that put American Workers first. Based on the secrecy of the deal, the involvement of major Global Corps who will have the power to overcome our hard fought for laws, he doesn't need to know more than that.
Hillary has moved to Bernie's longtime positions on other major issues also, Marriage Equality eg which she was still opposed to until 2013.
I've heard questions about how Bernie will work with a Congress that opposes his policies.
I think this demonstrates his Leadership. He has been able to persuade the Democratic Front Runner that her positions on some major issues are not where the American people are.
This is very good for the country. To see a real Leader begin the process of moving the country to where the majority of the PEOPLE are on major issues that affect all of our lives, LEFT.
I won't be surprised to see some of the GOP gang begin following him to the Left also on some issues because no one can win this election by supporting issues the people oppose so overwhelmingly.
However, much as I applaud people who are willing to admit when they are wrong, I want a LEADER in the White House.
Someone who got it right HIMSELF who has the judgement and the foresight to know when something is going to be bad for the country.
And because I know I can trust Bernie Sanders not to change his mind on the above mentioned issues once the elections are over.
Hillary? She has far too many Corporate Donors who will be negatively impacted financially by a Government that opposes these issues.
As Biden said recently 'the money in politics has a corrosive effect on our system' AND he pointed out, even on good people, such as even himself.
I am with the person who is NOT going to influenced by Corporate Cash and who is smart enough to see the consequences of bad legislation BEFORE he publicly opposes it and/or casts his vote for or against it .
Congratulations to Bernie for the influence he is having on this Election.
Without him in this race, most of these issues would not even be mentioned.

No, losers who are wrong on the issues influence no one.
Bernie is his own person and always been and has been consistently right on all the major issues facing this country for decades now.

Hillary Clinton can win a national election. Bernie can't even win one southern state!

(62,325 posts)unlike Sanders, doesn't oppose the main Principles involved in the TPP. Giving power to Global Corps to overcome Sovereign Govt's laws. She is a proponent of this horrible policy. Carefully choosing her words but not mentioning this, doesn't translate to 'I oppose the TPP' She doesn't, we know this.

With Bernie we don't have to worry about that. We know his record.

(19,326 posts)Personally I have not one whit of confidence that Hilary will keep any campaign promise
that is at variance with her corporate masters..
Her ties to Wall St; big pharma, private prison industry, MIC, et. al. are so obvious and
so well-documented that I don't know how anyone can take her seriously as some kind
of last-minute "populist champion of the people" against the very interests that have given
her million$ upon million$ of hand-per-fist money for her campaign coffers.
Even her stated "opposition" to TPP is so tepidly worded, with several caveates the size
of Manhatten, that it could mean anything, or nothing. But never-mind all that, Hillary gets
breathless headline coverage announcing "Hillary Clinton Opposed To TPP".
For me this changes absolutely NOTHING but she'll probably fool some of the people some
of the time.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)no sense to me. Why would you support a candidate you don't trust? Anyhow, all these announcements coming out just days before the debates, tells me her campaign is just talking, this is a 'strategy' not a policy.
She knows the TPP will come up so they rushed this out so she can claim she too 'opposes it'.
They really do think we are stupid. I am hoping that most people are not and will see right through these games.

The problem is that she stays so vague in her
Commitments that she can claim as a nominee
that she had just been thinking about it.

(45,251 posts)As to Citizen's United, as a practical matter, neither of them can do anything about it, other than appoint anti-CU justices if and when there are vacancies on the SCOTUS. Initially, Hillary said something like "even if requires a Constitutional amendment," but she has since walked that back.
As far as working with Congress, Sanders has been far more effective at that than Hillary was when she was a Senator. More meaningfull legislation (including amendments) that he wrote because law. With Hillary, most of the bills that she wrote that became law were ceremonial, like commemorating the 225th anniversary of the revolution or some such.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)again on the Constitutional Amendment. See my new OP here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251657137
There is one thing they ALL can do, Dems I mean, REFUSE TO TAKE THAT MONEY, then SLAM Repubs who are doing so especially considering it is now a top issue with over 80% of voters.
But so far, Hillary is helping to strengthen CU by accepting the unlimited amounts of money flowing into Super Pacs, made possible by what she now says she opposes.
Talk is cheap.
Bernie isn't just talking, he is doing his part to negate the effects of this awful legislation.

(45,251 posts)And, yes, when Bernie talked about a constitutional amendment, I said the same thing. However, I found this OP of mine on the subject first.

(11,197 posts)is a mistake for the Clinton campaign. She will alienate the core Clinton supporters with her recent "Socialist" epiphany, as they clearly despise Bernie's brand of Democratic Socialism. As Claire McCaskill, Third-Way Senator Supreme and Clinton BFF, has warned America "He's a Socialist for Gods Sake!!!"
Hillary will not pull any Bernie supporters either by suddenly adopting his philosophy, as there is a complete lack of "trust" in opportunistic last minute political transformations. A phoenix from the ashes she is not.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)supporter will flocking to her campaign as a result of this apparent change of heart on some of these issues.
I agree it will probably harm her with many of her own supporters. After all they have been DEFENDING her positions on these issues.
I personally have been informed that she is 'thoughtful and unlike Bernie has EXPERIENCE that informs her 'judgement' on these issues.
I notice a lack of response to this thread eg, by any of her normally very vocal supporters in some of my threads. Which I always welcome because you just know that she will let them down if she sees that what they are defending her for, will harm her chances to win.
I know the feeling, I defended her too for many years only to have to acknowledge that I was defending someone who would not defend me and who ended up BFF with the very people we were defending her from.
Fool me once etc, to quote one of her now BFF and according to his mother, Babs, 'part of the family'

Clinton supporters are terrified to speak to this issue. Oil profits over clean drinking water is not very Democratic.

(62,325 posts)cannot be trusted to remain true to their principles.
The consistency of Bernie Sanders on major issues compared to the political opportunism we see from most politicians is a breath of fresh air.
If you are afraid to speak out on something as important as the threat of fracking to our environment because of who you support, it's time to support someone else imo.
