Bernie Sanders Brings Out Record-Breaking Crowd in Boston
Boston seems to be feeling the Bern harder than any city the Vermont senator has visited to date while 16,000 RSVPd to tonights rally on Facebook, the 26,000 capacity Boston Convention Center was completely packed for tonights Bernie Sanders rally, and the overflow space outside of the convention center filled up quickly.
Before Sanders spoke, Symone Sanders (no relation), his national communications director, took the stage and asked the crowd if they were ready to end mass incarceration of black people, to which the crowd responded with thundering cheers. After encouraging the crowd to text Bernie to 82623 to join the campaigns text alert list, Sanders handed the stage off to Jimmy OBrien, president of the Boston Carmens union. OBrien touted Sanders credentials for fighting for public infrastructure, and took a shot at Massachusetts governor Charlie Baker for trying to privatize Bostons rail system, saying it would make a bad situation worse.
.....When Bernie finally took the stage to rousing applause, one of the first things he mentioned was the commitment of his supporters for reaching their new fundraising milestone of $26 million in the last quarter. According to the Sanders campaign, 650,000 supporters contributed 1 million times over the course of the campaign. 99 percent of Bernies donations were $100 or less. After shouting out his donors, Bernie took a jab at politicians whose campaigns are primarily funded by undisclosed donors and superPACs.
I dont have a superPAC, I dont want a superPAC, I dont represent the agenda of the billionaire class or of corporate America, and I dont want their money, Sanders said to rousing cheers and applause.
Bernie Sanders only has a SuperPack...with a k.

It's interesting to me how the Dem elites in many areas of American life endorse HRC while the people they purportedly represent are increasingly for Bernie.

These are Obama '08 kinds of crowds.

(17,064 posts)Obamas largest Mass crowd was 10,000. And Bernies fundraising is a good bit ahead of Obamas at this point in time.

(15,435 posts)But we live in Florida and I've found that there is less time now when we DON'T have our air on. I lived here for a very long time and can remember which months I knew I could turn it off and open my windows, just for outside air. Whether it's less fresh now is another question, but I've always liked opening my windows when I can.

That said, it's remarkable how quickly you got banned.
Also, I should mention that their original graphic was answered with a graphic of my own, so I think they've already gotten the message that Bernie supporters don't think very much of the "Problem with Big Crowds" graphic they posted. Link to the Bernista version of their graphic below.

(19,926 posts)So Bernie is the only politician I can remember hearing on Thom's show. Every Friday for an hour (until the campaign started and unless there was a vote), he calls it Brunch with Bernie.
Thom did have a conversation with O'Malley recently that he aired. Unfortunately I wasn't able to hear it due to work. Hillary has an open invitation to come on as well...

(55,981 posts)Since when has that mattered in politics. It's hard to make quid pro quo deals in large crowds.
JDPriestly
(57,936 posts)Hey! The reason Bernie attracts these crowds is that he has been talking to Americans 'ONE ON ONE" for years on Brunch with Bernie brought by Thom Hartmann and on Big Ed, Ed Schultz's shows.
Bernie has been talking to Americans and now Hillary has decided that is a good idea and is copying Bernie. (Just kidding.)
Hillary, here is how it is done:
Instead of giving paid speeches to rich people like Wall Street investors, you talk to ordinary Americans on the radio every week or close to every week.
And then, after you have asked them what they want changed in America, you write the platform, file your papers and run for office.
Bernie is in touch with the American people.
That's why he draws these crowds.

(486 posts)I was just about to add that pic to the thread myself, because it really helps to tell the story of just how massive that Boston turnout was.
...and as usual, Bernie came outside after the rally and spoke to that huge overflow crowd that couldn't get inside to hear him.
If you combine the Boston rally with the @6000 from his Springfield rally earlier in the afternoon... roughly 30k turned out in Massachusetts in one day.
He's an amazing candidate.

(3,894 posts)cold to see Bernie, they just might get out there and vote, too. And we need to impress on them how crucial their primary votes, down-ballot votes, and mid-term votes are, too. Like Bernie says, he can't do it alone, he needs like-minded congress members more than ever to effect the radical changes he espouses.
Go Bernie!

(2,227 posts)We are all part of this. When a new person finds Bernie, they stay and no amount of Koch bothers money will change that. Once we get him elected, it is up to us to push for the things we need. That's what the enthusiasm is about, he not only won't forget us once he's in office, but he will still depend on us to get stuff done. At least that's why I'm so excited. Let's see how the M$M dismisses all of this.

(88,117 posts)"You guys are the true believers," Sanders said, addressing those in the dark outside who gave him a celebrity's welcome after his hour and half speech inside the arena.
"Thank you for freezing out here," he continued standing on a platform with a microphone and waving to the crowd over their cheers. "Were you able to see the speech?
.......The line to get into the Boston event was at one point five blocks long. A team of nearly 300 volunteers ran up and down it, signing people up on the campaign mailing list as they waited. More volunteers were stationed at entry tables with computers logging contact information, handing out donation forms, and selling merchandise - more than $13,000 worth in total, according to the campaign. Many in the crowd brought homemade signs.
..... "The energy has just gotten so strong," said Raymond Bazydlo from Essex, New York, who said he has been to several of Sanders' campaign events along the East Coast. "I see the crowds seem to be getting younger and the enthusiasm is getting greater."
Dorthody Albrecht, a teacher from Holyoke, Massachusetts, said because she is from Massachusetts, which neighbors Sanders' home state of Vermont, she has been aware of Sanders' record for some time.
"I support Bernie Sanders, because I feel he is not bought," she said.
