2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumRanking states most representative of the country.
This is an article from 2009 but its probably still pretty accurate.
Based on the author's model Illinois is the most representative state.
Notice NH and Iowa are more reddish than most other states indicting less representative.
Also notice Vermont is very dark red meaning one of least representatives states in the country.
The article also provides a tool with options to create your own ranking based on weighting of various factors.

(7,754 posts)liberal and then there is the rural rest of the state. The further East you go, the more conservative we become. Also, lots of the southern counties are awash in Mormons.

(7,754 posts)they are a majority but a very tiny majority. Wasco county even voted for Obama the first time. I lived in Portlandia for years and while I love it dearly, it really is not representative of the state.

(1,209 posts)is conservative. That must be why we elected President Obama twice.
California has about 39 million people, Illinois about 12 million, Illinois population is rather stagnant, California and New York with
20 million together could represent the nation. California has a strong conservative movement after all it is the state that kicked off the Reagan revolution and New York has no shortage of conservatives especially influential uber wealthy conservatives.
I see this only as more propaganda and spin to cover the coming election theft. We are are once again to be subjected to all these fake studies that we are rally all economic and social conservatives.
Not to mention all publications have a political agenda, Washington Post owner is libertarian Jeff Bezos, his publisher is Fred Ryan, called by some to be the nation's number one Ronald Reagan fan, but in fact a Reagan myth builder and true believer in voodoo economics.
