Related: About this forumJeb Bush Advocates Raising Social Security Age To 70
This should go over with his constituency like a lead balloon. Here's presumptive 2016 presidential nominee Jeb Bush when asked about Social Security benefits on this Sunday's Face the Nation.
Bush: But we need to look over the horizon and begin to phase in over an extended period of time going from 65 to 68 or 70. And that by itself will help sustain the retirement system for anybody under the age of 40.

(14,733 posts)With ever increasing automation and computerization, there's less need of humans to do the work. We should have shorter work weeks (that still pay full time living wage pay) and earlier retirements.

(4,229 posts)I think part of the problem now with kids living with their parents into middle age.
Parents are forced due to lack of defined pensions to continue to work so the jobs that their kids should have picked up they have to wait much longer for.

The truth is that most of us have a damned hard time doing physical work after 55. The retirement age needs to be lowered for the people who do the hard work of this world.
If he wants to "save" Social Security, he needs to raise the ridiculously low earnings cap on contributing to it. He also needs to make sure Congress can't touch it, that it remains a pay as you go old age insurance program.
However, he's like every other moron who has sweated his life away in an office. He might have had a mild heart attack, the early signs of Type II diabetes, or hypertension but he can't understand why some young whippersnapper wants him to retire at 65 to free up the job. He's still in great shape, hell, he could work to 80! Why can't everybody else?
That's why they want to raise the retirement age. They don't get it. Unless we can manage to throw them out of those offices, they'll never get it.

(30,058 posts)To be solvent from 2012 to 2036. Either reform could lengthen the solvency. I am not a fan of Jeb but i do realize our younger generations will need Social Security. Since many in the GOP thinks social security is an entitlement, interesting Jeb is offering this.

If you can handle that job for 8 hours and keep up, feel free to raise the age limit.

But the stupid ones, the white males in southern states with high-school-or-less educations, over half of them will die before they can cash in.

If it hadn't come from someone only marginally smarter and more competent than the worst President we've ever had, it would actually be a rather just and clever solution to move the burden of Social Security onto the foolish people who traded their freedom for the illusion of safety, allowed the criminals to take over and loot our treasury, and lowered the quality of life for a hundred million Americans.
