Why Is Media Ignoring Bernie Sanders?

Whenever a 2016 Republican hiccups, we hear about it throughout the echo chamber. Online and off.

We also hear about every invented Clinton scandal on the planet in minute detail. But if you tune all of that noise out and listen very carefully, see if you can find mention of Bernie Sanders' campaign kickoff on Wednesday. Other than a 40-year old paper that they're intentionally blowing up, see if you can find any mention of Sanders as a credible candidate.

Crickets.

Eric Boehlert at Media Matters noticed, too,

On May 26, Sen. Bernie Sanders hosted his first major campaign rally since announcing his presidential candidacy last month. Staged on the banks of Lake Champlain in his hometown of Burlington, Vermont, the Sanders rally reportedly drew more than five thousand people, making it one of the largest campaign events of 2015, hosted by either a Democrat or a Republican.

But the sprawling rally didn't cause much of a media stir. Rather than cover it as a major news event, theWashington Post ignored the rally in its print edition the next day, as did the New York Times, according to a search of the Nexis database. The network news programs that night covered the event in just a few sentences.

He is definitely a force. At the beginning they thought he would be some pesky thing that might upset Hillary but now the repubs are worried he will come after them. Probably Rupert Murdoch doesn't like him.

10. You will know he is a "threat"

when they treat him like they did bill and Hillary, Gore, Dean, Edwards, Kerry and Obama.

The reason you don't hear anything about him is because they don't take him seriously at this point.

If they did, they could do what they do to the front runner - relentlessly throw shit at them until something sticks.

I like him, am voting for him and am going to support him.

But, this fantasy that he is threat to anyone right now defies that we have seen my entire life.

The powers to be don't IGNORE the threats, they destroy them.

Until such time as they actually start coming after him, he is not a "threat" in their minds.

They desperately hope people do not hear his message.
I feel sorry for people so resigned to the fact that America deserves nothing more than politicians owned by corporations/ banks and wealthy. You are entitled to your opinion which I disagree with but don't call my opinion fantasy. Off to the dustbin with you.

when it is a fantasy, thank you.

Most right wingers have the "opinion" that trickle down economics is the end all, be all.

And, just like trickle down economics, the "opinion" that the powers to be 'desperately hope" that people do not hear Sanders message is the very definition of a fantasy - something that you WANT to believe even though it not only has no basis in, but in fact runs counter any actual reality.

We will know big money takes Bernie Sanders seriously when they treat him the way they have treated any other candidate they viewed being a threat - going after him viciously.

14. You have a funny way of supporting Bernie

Saying Bernie supporters are corporate loving hacks.

Your emotional instability aside, the whole thing is based on him being real.

And, this "they are ignoring him out of fear!" is bullshit political spin.

He is a modestly known senator from the second least populated state in the country who just announced his candidacy for president a week ago.

Hillary Clinton was the first lady of the country for 8 years, served as senator for the fourth most populous state and secretary of state, positioning herself for running for president for a quarter century now.

So, yeah, she gets a lot more media coverage than Bernie does.

This whole little brother syndrome with Hillary and bullshitting about how great of a THREAT he is does no good for him as a candidate.

I seriously doubt Bernie Sanders would agree with it and you do him no service in trying to advance it.

That being said - choosing not to make the case FOR HIM and engaging in working hard at alienating people against him in 3, 2 ...

That's what the "liberal media" have decided almost unanimously. I think it's just laziness. Real journalism is pretty much dead. It's so easy to simply copy what every other outlet is promoting to reprint or repeat the bullet points handed to you from some campaign PR flak, etc. And the media may have an investment in making sure Sanders doesn't get noticed. They are very much tied into the party machinery of the two major parties, and they know access to the White House would be very different if Sanders became president. This is uncharted territory for them, and they easily find themselves out of their depth when they have to deal with complexities such as third party candidates, especially third party candidates who want to run on the D or R ballot. So they find it easier to ignore candidates who challenge them, since they know their refusal to pay attention is likely to sink such candidates and make their jobs much, much easier.

I've seen him on every network and cable outlet since his announcement--save Faux, because I don't watch them. He may have appeared/been covered on that network, too.

I watched his initial campaign announcement (not the rally, the initial declaration) on CNN while some folks were griping that they weren't covering him. He did an in-depth interview as well.

I've seen him on TV more than any of the GOP clown car members. I guess the right wing needs to thin the herd a bit.
