2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHave you heard about that Bernie guy?
I've had a few people start off like that. They are unsure of how to approach the subject.
If I say... You mean Bernie Sanders? They are off to the races telling me how great he is.
If I say... Bernie who? They get vague and mention that he is this socialist guy. But...
In the second scenario, they are trying to find out how right wing I might be. They don't want to ruffle any feathers.
These people are not thought leaders or even generally political. They are ordinary people touched by Bernie's message. They are timid but they are talking about Bernie.
Regular everyday people who didn't know who Bernie was a week ago are talking him up.
I think he has a shot.

There is no way in Hell Bernie will dominate the airwaves. My local paper had one story on Bernie, from April 29. It ran an AP story on April 29, when his impending announcement was leaked. It was accompanied by a rather horrifying picture that some poor schmuck must have spent hours searching out.
By contrast, there were 5 Cruz stories in that time period.
Fortunately, the mass media are becoming less and less important as sources of information for many if not most Americans.
I had coffee this morning with an old buddy who is generally very cynical about any and all politicians and their motives. He started babbling about Bernie, with a sort of enthusiasm I hadn't ever seen from him before. If Bernie can crack a guy lake that, I think there are some seriously strange and remarkable things happening.
