better, however, we definitely have an uphill fight, and the odds do not favor us. We definitely need to GOTV, especially women and minorities, however, midterm elections don't usually inspire enthusiasm, and that is not in our favor

Doesn't ANYONE have a workable strategy for GOTV? This can't be that hard! Of course, until they allow vote-by-mail in every state, they have working class folks by the short ones ...

Pryor is trailing Cotton by about 5 points and Asa Hutchinson (former head of DEA) has the lead in the Governor's race. It's pretty disheartening.

Alaska...Begish has been ahead by a fair amount until this. And Michigan, Peters had an even bigger lead, typically 6+ points over many polls. And Louisiana. Landrieu has been ahead by a very tight margin. I wonder about this poll. Seems to be tilting right, which may be accurate or may be indicative of something wrong with the sampling.

http://www.adn.com/article/20140908/laine-welch-sullivan-will-miss-kodiak-fisheries-debate

“Surprised and disappointed” was the reaction by Sen. Mark Begich upon learning that his opponent Dan Sullivan has bowed out of an Oct. 1 fisheries debate in Kodiak. It is the second time this year that Sullivan has declined to participate in the Chamber of Commerce event that has been an election year tradition since 1990.

“I can’t recall a time that a candidate has not participated in the Kodiak debate,” Begich said as he readied to head back to Washington, D.C., on Friday. “It’s a must-do for statewide candidates. It’s not an option. It’s clear he doesn’t have the same Alaska values as we do when it comes to our fisheries, and I think he is doing an incredible disservice to Alaskans. But that is his MO. He avoids issues, only shows up at very controlled settings, and talks in bumper stickers and applause lines, and that’s all he likes to do.”

Sullivan campaign manager Ben Sparks told debate organizers that Sullivan does not have a prior commitment keeping him from the fisheries debate, but that “he is just too busy with all the traveling he is doing.” The two-hour debate is broadcast live to over 330 Alaska communities.

“I think it’s a shame because Alaskans will miss out on a forum that focuses on the largest employer in the state,” Begich added. “Seafood is our biggest export by far and nearly 85 percent of all the fish caught in Alaska comes from waters that are under federal jurisdiction. If you can’t even have a debate, how do Alaskans know where he stands?”

<snip>

Fisheries are a big deal here and for him to deliberately skip this debate, especially with nothing conflicting on his schedule, will be seen as a slap in the face. Add to that his snubbing of the debate on Native issues, his residency questions, etc., I personally think he's got an uphill battle.

Also from this article: "History shows that since 1990, no candidate who has skipped the Kodiak fisheries debate has gone on to win their election. Case in point: Sean Parnell vs. Don Young in 2008."

14. I spent the weekend

Sep 2014

visiting old friends who I had lost contact with.
There were 4 of us. 2 Union guys and 2 non-Union. We had a great visit until politics came up.
I was the only one who (half-heartedly) defended Obama and his attempt at running America.
None of my friends had anything good to say about the POTUS and it had nothing to do with race. We were 2 and 2 on race.
I never expected the vitriol from these hard-working middle class ( i am retired and not the earner I used to be) guys when it came to Obama (all other incumbents also).
I have been disappointed on many occasions with our President and I do not blindly follow anyone blindly. We were talking about our "glory days" and how much more we could afford 30 years ago. That was depressing, even though we all own our own homes ( one friend no longer owed the bank on his). We have all raised our children and lamented that they could not afford the same lives that we experienced.
All (of them) blamed Obama for our current economy ( to be fair he has had 6 years to improve it). I started naming other presidents since Reagan and attempted to blame most of our current problems on trickle down and Union busting. i had to admit that Clinton signed NAFTA into law and that, on average, our democratic presidents haven't helped the majority of Americans, just like the republicans. Both parties have all been about enriching themselves and their wealthy supporters. The same held true for most state politicians.
Even for people from the same socioeconomic backgrounds, that would do anything for each other, politics is a joy ending discussion to get into. We stopped that topic and moved on to better conversations. Thank God, we still had a great reunion and made plans for similar visits soon.
These are not political people, they are guys with a strong work ethic and proud fathers and grandfathers. I did (before we changed the subject) tell them about Bernie Sanders and his consistent "people-first" political career. They had never heard of him (this IS Tn.) but if their lives allowed them time, they agreed to find out more about him.
We all agreed that America was no longer a 1st world country and there has to be sweeping changes in politicians and the money in politics. Again, this is Tn. and the word "socialist" was not well received. They probably thought that I had lost too much blood to my brain during one of my heart attacks.. I hope they find time to research Bernie because the MSM isn't about to honestly inform anyone about him.
Next week, we are getting together for target practice. None of us are hunters but we love to compete with each other in various games. It will be nice. we did agree to leave the political discussions alone for awhile..

.... Cantor's polling had him with a 34-point lead just a week before the election. He lost by 10 points. Of how much value ARE these polls? How do you tell one with a solid methodology and execution from one that is pure bullshit?

I think that, like all "information" in our culture, polls have been twisted to the point that they might not mean anything at all.
