Eric Cantor is a delicate little flower (whose intellectual guide is Ann Coulter)

To justify carrying water for the fringe right on immigration, GOP House leader whines that the president is mean

HEATHER DIGBY PARTON

If you are curious as to whom the Republican leadership truly respects and listens to about the proper policies for the party to follow, the answer might surprise you. Certainly one would expect that they’d listen to their strategists and pollsters. And it’s well known that they grant their donors the kind of fidelity one would normally only expect of 12th century knights of the realm. But if one is to judge by their approach to immigration, they are following the advice of the great oracle of wingnuttia, Ann Coulter.

Yesterday Democrats lamented the fact that the Senate immigration bill, passed over a year ago, still languishes in the House. The president made a mild comment suggesting that the American people are “ahead of the House Republicans” in this matter and would like to move ahead. He later called House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and they had a discussion of the issue after which Cantor released a pouty press release whining that the president is a big meanie:

Today, President Obama called me to discuss his desire for comprehensive immigration reform. The President called me hours after he issued a partisan statement which attacked me and my fellow House Republicans and which indicated no sincere desire to work together. After five years, President Obama still has not learned how to effectively work with Congress to get things done. You do not attack the very people you hope to engage in a serious dialogue. I told the President the same thing I told him the last time we spoke. House Republicans do not support Senate Democrats’ immigration bill and amnesty efforts, and it will not be considered in the House. I also reiterated to the President there are other issues where we can find common ground, build trust and get America working again. I hope the President can stop his partisan messaging, and begin to seriously work with Congress to address the issues facing working middle class Americans who are struggling to make ends meet in this economy.

It looks like somebody didn’t get his nap.

So, when Cantor says: "You do not attack the very people you hope to engage in a serious dialogue."

Does he actually spend time in the house? How many Benghazi hearings, Obamacare repeal votes, "You Lie's," etc. etc. etc. have gone through the house?

Apparently his irony meter is on the fritz.

That is one way you can tell these congressional republicans have some mental imbalances--for a normal human, the cognitive dissonance would be downright immobilizing.

People seeking a "serious dialogue" with others generally don't hold meetings to decide how to make the President of the United States "fail" in accomplishing their agenda just as said President is being inaugurated. It's all been downhill between Republicans and PBO since even before he was inaugurated. PBO STILL made lots of fruitless efforts to work with Republicans throughout his first term and even somewhat into the second one, mostly because there's always work that needs to be done to keep government running but also because finding bipartisan solutions to America's problems was largely what he ran on in 2008.

In saying that I do not mean to condone bullying. The way he furtively glances around the room makes me think that at some level, he is looking around to see if he is going to get away with his payback. Maybe someday he will finally get his underwear tugged back out of crack and he will become a normal person again. In the meantime, he is a vindictive little shit looking to make good on the slights of his youth. Just my $0.02, YMMV.

In November. So we are stuck with this whinny jerk. What is wrong with that part of Virginia? Are the Dem's so demoralized they cower? How can he run unopposed?

I used to think the way President Obama could get things done with this Congress would be to just give them everything they want and they'll be nice and acquiesce. I don't think that anymore.

The reality of this Congress is, there is no way in HAYUL the president can possibly work with them because they simply will not work with him. If the president were to walk into Congress with a 50-page bill that killed everything the Republicans hate - Obamacare, the EPA, the BLM, the Department of Education, and on and on and on - it would be pronounced dead on arrival. They'd come up with some reason for it...not enough tax cuts, maybe...but the real reason would be the Republicans don't want to see the president's signature on anything but a resignation letter, and they're doing everything in their power to keep anything from getting that far.
