Why now? That was the question that I decided to answer when I set out to write this speech for this years Skepticon about the religious rights war on women, whichin case you havent noticedhas been turned up dramatically in recent years. Ive done a lot of written and spoken work chronicling the war on women in that time, but it was nice to have an opportunity to stand before a pro-secular audience and talk about why.

Just today, for instance, we got to enjoy Fox News do a segment where women were straight up told that its impossible to have a husband and a full time job. Perhaps this clip will go into the talk the next time I give it. Anyway, enjoy the talk and the clips and my love of talking with my hands. And check out the rest of the talks at Skepticon, most of which were delightful.

One of the cars also has one that says, "A man of quality is not threatened by a woman seeking equality" - the time for a female president is way overdue, but at least we got a non-bleached-white president. That's a start.

(40,416 posts)There's always been an undercurrent of this. But it's been under a veil of stealth, with the GOP keeping it under wraps publicly, only spoke of in smoke-filled rooms, so to speak.
The tea party changed that. They speak openly of their agenda, unashamed and brazenly. This has to make the GOP stalwarts nervous as hell as they watch tea candidates go down in flames because they refuse to stop speaking about the real GOP agenda. They cannot stop flapping their gums.
It is a huge problem for the Republicans. The thing here is that they are on the whole a fundie Christian political movement, made up of people whose culture is to "witness" for their beliefs. These are the type of people who many of us are used to see knocking on our doors on Sunday morning on occasion. It isn't within their cultural milieu to stop flapping their gums.
That's why they are likely not going to win this. I pray (so to speak).
