I say this without malice. There's an element of personal tragedy here I know only to well. Somebody will have to drop the H-Bomb if it looks like Newt could win the Presidency.

When Newt was contemplating running, PBS noted,

Newt Gingrich is the sonic boom of a presidential election season. ,,, Maybe that explains the big presidential tease, which will continue as long as he can hold the spotlight. If there were a large enough vacuum, then obviously I'm willing to consider it," he said in July.

No, no, Newt! plead many of his ardent supporters and strategists. But other observers say the G.O.P --a party which, in columnist Joe Klein's words, "can't resist a tent show"-- won't be able to resist "drafting" Newt.

His most ardent supporters plead with Newt not to run? In her own way, so did his wife in 1995. BTW, Marianne Gingrich comes across as a real piece of work.

What happens if Newt runs?, I ask.

"He can't do it without me," she replies. "I told him if I'm not in agreement, fine, it's easy" --she giggles at her naughtiness. "I just go on the air the next day, and I undermine everything...I don't want him to be president and I don't think he should be." (Same Ref)

'I don't think he should be President'.

Why? Marianne doesn't answer, she's learned a few grandiose dodges from Newt. Right now, the presidency is not a single person. It's not so much what he'd be doing. It's what I'd be doing.

Romney can fracture the Reagan coalition. Newt can repeat 1972. Not a nice choice for the GOP, to put it mildly.

They might prefer Gingrich to hang in there and force a brokered convention so they can annoit a better candidate like Mitch Daniels or Jeb Bush.

vote for WHOEVER is the Republican nominee in the General Election. WHOEVER means ANYONE. The guy who is NOT Obama (insert any name here). If we found out Newt was at the center of the financial crisis, had distributed child porn, and had helped bin Ladin plan 9/11, they would still vote for him.

They were already braced for (horrors) voting for Romney, and that's a pretty big deal for the hardcore conservative base.

They've been frothed up for 4 years by talk radio and constant chain fwd fwd fwd emails trashing Obama and creating an extreme sense of dire urgency to get him out.
