VAWA act passed in house: on its way to the Presidents desk!

The Republican-led House on Thursday passed the Democrats’ version of the Violence Against Women on Thursday, relenting after a painful battle over expanded protections for gay, Native American and illegal immigrant women.

The final vote was 286-138, winning over 199 Democrats and 87 Republicans. It’s the third time Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) has brought legislation to a floor vote without the support of at least half his conference. The GOP’s substitute failed 166-257.

(snip)

The original House GOP plan, as of last week, was to pass its own limited version of the reauthorization and go to conference with the Senate. But after anti-domestic-violence advocates slammed the GOP’s alternative, they decided to fold.

I believe that this is the third time he waved the Hastert Rule. This is GREAT NEWS!

2. Wait. What?

You mean it's NOT all right for me to sexually assault Lesbians and Native Americans?!

Oh, the horror! The HORROR!!

I can feel the jaws of tyranny tightening around me!

But seriously, it's pretty fucking embarrassing that we even had this debate to begin with. Now on to our embarrassing debate about whether people should be allowed to vote.

*sigh*

3. Why do I think

that more than a few GOTPers got some real nasty messages from their female constituents? I'm sure my congresscritter, the turkey-puppet Bob Goodlatte, probably voted no, though.

4. Beautiful news!

The phone calls and signed petitions, helped to make this happen!

I am elated! Now we have more work to do!

Thanks for posting this, Raine.

9. You are welcome! We made this happen!

It was probably the last Piece of legislation before they left DC this afternoon. My partner and I were thinking about going to National airport this afternoon to heckle the GOP'rs for not doing anything about the sequester.

Sadly with the sequester going into effect, the funding might be an issue -- but this is an amazing step forward. ONWARD!

10. As far as those places go, WAWA is the best.

At least on the East coast.

7. Some more details on the back story:

A majority of Republicans, 138, voted against the Senate bill. This technically violates the GOP’s “Hastert Rule,” which requires a majority of the House majority to support any legislation brought to the floor.

According to The National Review Online, House Minority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) held a closed-door meeting with his caucus to warn them that there would be a “civil war” in the party if the House did not allow a vote on the Senate’s bill. After said meeting, only nine Republicans voted against taking up the bill — included in those were nine were Tea Partiers Steve King (R-IA) and Paul Broun (R-GA), both likely candidates for the U.S. Senate in 2014.

“I applaud moderate Republican voices in the House who stood up to their leadership to demand a vote on the Senate bill,” Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), a sponsor of the Senate bill that passed two weeks ago, said. (snip)

Much of the president’s agenda, including comprehensive immigration reform and some alternative to the sequestration, would likely pass the House if bills were brought to the floor instead of being effectively vetoed by Tea Party members and Republicans afraid of primary challenges.

But every time Speaker Boehner violates the rule, he weakens the value of the majority and threatens his own job.

From the National Memo

Personally I don't care about his job if it means governance can't happen -- I don't recall Ms. Pelosi ever having the problems Mr. Boehner does. Obstruction is not governing.
