Republican losses obscure US drift to right

BY BY CHARLES BABINGTON

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican angst over presidential election losses obscures the fact that many conservative ideals have prospered for decades.

Conservative efforts have pushed the government rightward on taxes, spending and other policies, despite losses on some social fronts. One might say Republicans keep losing battles but winning wars.

This rightward drift serves as a curious, often ignored backdrop for GOP leaders’ claims that the country is burdened by massive spending and taxation.

Republican lawmakers, for instance, adamantly oppose President Barack Obama’s call for higher tax revenues as part of an alternative to big spending cuts about to hit government agencies. Yet the federal tax burden, as a portion of the overall economy, has been lower during Obama’s four years in office than at any time since 1950.

And what about claims that spending on food stamps, environmental oversight and other nuts-and-bolts federal operations is out of control? Nonmilitary discretionary spending ranged from 3.8 percent to 5.1 percent of the overall economy throughout the 1970s. Starting in 1986, it didn’t exceed 3.8 percent again until the 2008 recession dramatically slowed the economy.

1. Jesus. It's not a DRIFT to the right.

We're being PROPELLED to the right, regardless of either the public good or the public will, by perverse social-engineering campaigns funded and directed by corporate plutocrats.

2. Always thought

that the social issues (gay marriage, abortion etc) are distractions to keep the masses occupied. Like arguing about curtain color while the house is burning.
"Sure we are about to make financial decisions that will affect everybody and their children' children, but how about you distract yourself with the issue of government funded contraception"

3. Even Obama says he would be considered a moderate Republican in the 1980s

In effect, the Republicans have taken over the Democratic Party.

It's been a great success for them - even many DUers think Obama is a liberal,
when he's actually a moderate conservative.

4. The pendulum swings

And in politics it always bears a sharp edge. Those on the right who have resisted its movement from a momentray far right position back toward the center have chosen to over-reach, grab the pendulum in motion, and attempt to arrest its progress -- typically getting cut up in the process (and wondering why).
