TexMessage: Gun coverage by Texas media is deficient, says Columbia Journalism Review
Tuesday, February 19, 2013

The Columbia Journalism Review slammed Texas reporters’ coverage of the gun issue, especially on new proposals in the Lone Star State advanced in response to the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

The Monday article spoke of recent moves to arm teachers, allow guns on campuses, and expand firearm training for school employees.

“And the press coverage of these proposals?” The authors wrote. “Well, a lot of it has failed to consider common sense questions, or provide context, analysis, or just plain reporting beyond what politicians and interest groups say.”

Among CJR’s enumerated failures was a lack of statistics on violence in Texas, and few reports on the numerous past firearm violations by Texas educators. According to CJR, more than 1,000 had violations in the past year, resulting in loss of teaching or firearm licenses.
