1. Inouye passed away in Dec. 2012

Dick Lugar lost a primary challenge and is no longer in the senate.

3. I do not get why this is important.

I understand what you mean, but is it just trivia or do you have a point?

6. Some of the states are finally being shoved to the back of the line after having high seniority

for one or both senators. The crop of senators that retired or were defeated in 2010 and 2012 cleared a path for others to move up. Wyden is now 20th in terms of seniority for Oregon. We haven't had anyone with that high of seniority since Mark Hatfield retired in 1997. Essentially we spend 15 years at the back of the line. I know some states have gotten double whammed with either retirements and/or incumbent defeats, but that's the way it is. The two California senators have been there for decades and eventually California is going to have to serve their time at the back of the line as well.

8. Senators who served prior to Watergate era. Did not leave after 1997.

Thurmond-SC 1956
Byrd-WV 1959
Kennedy-MA 1962
Inouye-HI 1963
Hollings-SC 1966
Stevens-AK 1968
Roth-DE 1971
Helms-NC 1973
Domenici-NM 1973
Biden-DE 1973
Ford-KY 1975
Bumpers-AR 1975
Glenn-OH 1975
Leahy-VT 1975.

Thurmond,Byrd,Kennedy,Inouye,Stevens,Roth,and Helms are deceased.
Hollings had he stayed on in 2004 could have defeated DeMint but would end up surviving another tough race from Joe"You Lie" Wilson in 2010. Hollings is 91 right now. Tim Scott is waiting in the US House.
Domenici had he ran again in 2008 would have won but it would be close against Udall.
Biden got promoted VPOTUS.
Ford had he stayed on in 1998,2004,and 2010- would have saved us from the Bunnings and Rand Paul's.
Bumpers gave the best defense of Clinton during his impeachment trail. Had he stayed on would have won in 2010.
Glenn was afraid of losing to Voinovich in 1998.

10. Leahy is the only one left of the lot

And he's getting up there in age. It will be interesting to see if he runs for reelection in 2016.
