With an Eye on South Carolina, Lindsey Graham Takes Aim at Chuck Hagel

by Patricia Murphy Feb 11, 2013 4:45 AM EST

The South Carolina senator's crusade against fellow Republican Chuck Hagel may seem inexplicable, but it's about defending himself from a 2014 primary challenge, reports Patricia Murphy.

Sen. Lindsey Graham put the White House on notice Sunday that he will block confirmation votes for Chuck Hagel to be defense secretary and John Brennan to be the Director of the CIA until he gets a tick-tock of President Obama's activities on the night of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. His pronouncement of "no confirmation without information" Sunday on CBS's Face the Nation marks the third different filibuster threat Graham has issued tied to Hagel's nomination

Not coincidentally, the string of scorching statements aimed at the administration has come as Graham prepares for a possible 2014 primary challenge for his Senate seat in South Carolina, a challenge that has yet to materialize.

Graham—who’d previously threatened to filibuster Hagel's nomination unless he received details about his former Republican Senate colleagues paid speeches, and testimony from Sec. Leon Panetta about the Benghazi attacks (which Panetta delivered last week)—has also declared Hagel "clueless" about Iran policy, asserted that Hillary Clinton "got away with murder" related to her handling of the attacks, and denounced Hagel's own performance at his confirmation hearing as "disturbing."

That tough talk has coincided with an almost deafening silence from Tea Party Republicans in the Palmetto state, who once censured Graham for “bipartisanship that continues to weaken the Republican brand and tarnish the ideals of freedom” and in 2010 constructed a wing tip-wearing effigy of the senator that they flushed down a fake toilet.

1. Graham wants to know when Obama woke up, brushed his teeth, urinated, pooped, ate breakfast etc....

What a stalker.

2. And on John Brennan

Sen. Lindsey Graham says he plans to block President Obama’s nominees to head up the Department of Defense and the CIA until the White House releases more information about what happened on the night of the September attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. The South Carolina Republican says he won’t filibuster but he will try to put a hold on Chuck Hagel, the Defense nominee, and John Brennan, Obama’s choice to lead the CIA. Graham defended his stance saying that then-Sen. Joe Biden also asked for more information before a 2005 vote to confirm a nominee. “No confirmation without information," Graham said on CBS News.

3. So.. Sounds to me like we should be preparing a viable DEM to knock

off whoever the tea-party fave is..

I'd LOVE to retire this turd.

Listen, if Lulu Colbert is a candidate for the House, why NOT target the Senate seat?

4. Miss Lindsey HAS to be overthetop to keep SCGOP voters showing up to vote for him now that

more of them have found out that he lives in a closet. They show it by not putting up yard signs in support of him - really - you can go throughout heavy GOP towns like Greenville (Bob Jones Univ) and only spot a handful of Graham's yard signs. Yet, they vote for him overwhelmingly - he does what they WANT.

5. I agree Sen. Graham may be in trouble with SC voters, but...

I'm kindly asking to refrain from the stereotypical shaming.

6. It's the truth, it's not 'stereotypical shaming'. Graham is called 'Miss Lindsey' down in SC

and has been for at least 2 decades. His situation is the REASON he has the episodes of being way overthetop. This is the reality-based community and Graham's situation in SC has a reality that just happens to affect everyone else in this country.

8. That's been his nick in SC for 2 decades. It's all part of WHO he is and the WHY he is

the WAY he is when he goes so overthetop in his pandering to the furthest right of the GOP base.
