Marco Rubio and Rand Paul to both respond to state of the union address...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/08/rand-paul-state-of-the-union_n_2648201.html?utm_hp_ref=state-of-the-union

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/06/marco-rubio-state-of-the-union_n_2632400.html?utm_hp_ref=state-of-the-union

Rand Paul for the Tea Party and Marco Rubio for the overall GOP

So there will be two rebuttals against the state of the union speech - that sucks.

Will this establish Rubio as a moderate?

1. Why does the "tea party" get a response at all?

they are not a registered political party. There is no Tea Party line in NY. Ridiculous.
Not sure this is designed to make Rubio look like a moderate, although he is certainly trying to to-image himself. They have allowed this non party party to respond before. Remember "crazty-eyes" Bachmann?

3. Exactly

These are both Republican rebuttals no matter what they like to call themselves within their own party. Can we get another democratic point of view in the interest of objectivity and fairness?

2. This just illustrates how bad the schism in the GOP has become

And I predict it will get worse. These people are nuts.

4. Giving the teabaggers their own response seems to be doubling down on the president.

The responses are nothing more than criticism. If the teabaggers are being given this much legitimacy, then they should be separated from the Republican party, period. When did the networks give time to other offshoots of the Democratic party, such as the Green party?

5. If the Democratic Party doesn't demand a follow up

they are being stupid.

President makes speech. Media gives republicans two free responses. Democrats should demand free rebuttal time.

6. While they are at it let

Michelle Bachmann
Rick Santorum
Newt Gingrich
Sarah Palin
Rick Perry
And Herman Cain give a response too. Might as well let whole clown car into the circus.

7. Rubio would be the moderate rebuttal kinda like if Mussolini was the "other" rebuttal

to an FDR "State of the Union" address ...

9. 2 wrongs don't make a right.

The Tea Party shouldn't have a response at all, unless they officially represent the GOP.

18. Oh I disagree... the more we can put the teabaggers on display

the more people will reject them. Let 'em put up their craziest, looniest one. Bachman did her cause a great deal of damage.

20. Bachmann did it the year before ...

It was Herman Cain who did it last year:

And though itís not the first time that Tea Party conservatives have splintered off from the party establishment with a separate response to the presidentís address, the dueling counter-arguments come in the midst of a civil war within the GOP.

Last year, failed presidential candidate Herman Cain was tapped by the Tea Party for the gig, following up Minnesota Republican Michele Bachmann who delivered the rebuttal the year prior

Paul's will be immediately after Rubio's, from the National Press Club. But no idea if it'll be televised - I doubt it, as that's a bad precedent the media is unlikely to want to set.

22. Anything that can stoke the fire of that civil war is great

IIRC, CNN was the only network to cover Bachman. Don't remember if anyone covered Cain, but it likely would be CNN.

10. since when

have we even HAD rebuttals for the State of the Union? This seems to me an invention of the 24 hour news cycle...

It's all just kabuki theater at this point...the POTUS will say what he says, they will do the same, and shit still won't change for any of us here in the trenches....

12. DU should also get to respond to the State of the Union.

If you totaled up the IQs of all Tea Party members in America it wouldn't equal the combined IQ total of any three posters here on DU.

14. Seems more to me like the party is in disarray.

The nutjobs aren't happy with the establishment pick of Marco and want someone even more extreme than him to give the rebuttal instead.

It doesn't really matter to me. Obama has more intelligence in his turds than Marco and Rand combined.

15. The party is in disarray.........

It's quite obvious that they're trying to win over the Latino vote while maintaining their racist tea party base.

Lots of luck with that!

16. Why should there even be a response to a SOTU address?

Pretty much all the other side will do is criticize whatever the President says. They've been at it for 4 years and counting. Nothing new.

It should be tier for two for both parties.
