Boehner: Ending abortion ‘one of our most fundamental goals this year’

In a special message to the annual anti-abortion protest March for Life, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) vowed that ending abortion would be one of the top priorities of Republicans this year.

“Defending life, of course, is about much more than voting the right way or saying the right things,” he said. “It’s about promoting a culture of life. It’s about understanding that abortion is a defining human rights issue of our time. Because human life is not an economic or political commodity, and no government on Earth has the right to treat it as such.”

“With all that’s at stake, it is becoming more and more important for us to share this truth with our young people, to encourage them to lock arms, speak out for life, and help make abortion a relic of the past,” Boehner continued. “Let that be one of our most fundamental goals this year.”

Boehner said the Republican-led House would again seek to pass the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, which sparked controversy in 2011 because of how it defined rape. The bill was approved by the House but died in the Senate.

always concerned about "life" as long as it's a clump of cells inside of a woman.

Kinda reminds me of Harry Reid, and Boehner is likely lying to his base as well.

22. I don't see this working

this turns off moderate Republicans and realize this issue cost them dearly in 2012 elections. If they want the big dollar, conservative donors they will have to market themselves with broader appeal. Anti-abortion stance is quickly becoming a rarity in the American sphere of consciences.

5. So, we missed the mark on the Obama One-Term Promise. OK, how about we bully the pregnant ladies?

Rep Boehner ... choice starts in the voting booth. Check your demographics...especially the "young people". That train has left the station.

6. Abortion will never be relic of the past

It's always been with us. The only change is that it's legal so rich women are not longer the only ones with access to quality care so they don't die from it.

that Obama was wasting time talking about abortion instead of the supposedly "more critical" issues like the economy and deficit?

as well let them earn a few pennies since it is their site I'm borrowing the article from.

Funeral parlors and cemetaries will be hiring a LOT more people. Oh, and child care for children who have lost their mothers.

15. If they really wanted to end abortion, they would encourage

birth control to be covered, since they are against that, They obviously are obviously not serious about it. Point it out to your anti abortion friends - let them see it is just a game to the republicans.

16. The Republicans will never get rid of Abortion

Once they lose abortion, they lose their biggest wedge issue. They dangle an abortion ban in front of gullible people like a carrot, but they'd be screwed if they every went ahead with it.

20. Yeah. They've lost the 'Gay Agenda' wedge and the 'Illegals are gonna get your jobs' issue

So with growing desperation they cling to 'They're gonna get your guns' and abortion.

30. Exactly what I've been saying for years.

If they truly wanted to get rid of it, they've had ample opportunities to do so.

They have to keep it around. It's a dog whistle, a Scooby Snack to toss to their base. And they know it too.

21. And that, right there, is repuke lunacy.

They will NEVER be able to "end abortion". It's such a private matter there is no way to regulate it or make it illegal. Abortions have been happening since the beginning of mankind and it will continue.

26. The majority of people understand

that the Repukes view the UNBORN as having MORE "rights to life", than the already BORN. Once a person passes the birth canal, from infancy to old age, they can fend for themselves. DIE for all we care.

29. Fundagelicals believe that life begins at conception, but

...original sin doesn't begin until birth. So once you're :01 seconds old, you are more pure and so better than you will be after you're born.

Really. These zeebs believe that. Thence the attitude you accurately captured in your post.

28. They keep trying to deny personhood and civil rights to half the population

and for the first time, 70% of that population is onto them and wants abortion to be kept safe and legal.

If Boner manages to ram this one through, I predict they'll all be gone in 2015 and such a constitutional amendment, giving human rights to something that is not yet human and stripping them from living, thinking women, is going to fail.

31. Chill

I went to Catholic school for 12 years. It was always 'vote Republican' because of abortion. What did those politicians (Bush included) ever do about it? Not a damn thing. This comment was just a ploy to get the Religious Right fired up at the March for Life.

Means nothing. Don't get distracted from the bigger issues.
