Letter to Ron Johnson

Dear Sen. Johnson,

I know that since you’re a drooling idiot, you might not understand what I’m going to tell you. But since you’ve been fairly persistent in asking this question of everyone including Clint Eastwood’s chair, I’ll try to answer it for you. Why was the attack on the Benghazi Consulate initially reported as an attack by protesters and not a terrorist attack? Because at the moment it was happening, protests were erupting all over the Arab world (particularly in Cairo) and the first reports from the scene were that it was a protest turned violent. At the moment the attack was happening, that was the most likely and plausible explanation.

Remember September 11th, 2001? The first report given to President George W. Bush was that a twin-engine plane (not a commercial airliner) had crashed into the World Trade Center. That report came at 8:55 a.m., nearly ten minutes after Flight 11 slammed into the WTC and nearly fifteen minutes after fighters had been scrambled from Otis Air Force Base. It wouldn’t be for another ten minutes before the President was informed that a second plane hit the WTC and that it was a terrorist attack. In chaotic and confusing situations like these, even when they’re happening in Lower Manhattan and not half-way across the globe, even the President of the United States can’t get accurate and timely information.

Now you might ask why the White House kept repeating the story that it was a protest turned violent when they knew better. It’s pretty simple. For starters, it would be grossly irresponsible for the White House to divulge everything it knew about the incident because there are national security issues to consider. So while the public has a right to know, it doesn’t have a right to know this very instant. Moreover, it is a long-used tactic of law enforcement to withhold sensitive crime scene information (and even disseminate false information) to trick the suspect into believing he made a clean getaway. As long as the terrorists believe that we’re not aware that it was a terrorist attack, they might get careless and do something that will aid us in their capture.

Why didn’t the Obama Administration make this information available to members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee? Because some Senators have a tendency to run for the nearest television camera and make unguarded statements that could jeopardize an investigation. Some senators are so interested in scoring political points that they would compromise national security in order to have a fresh talking point for their next appearance on Fox News. Stop me if this sounds familiar to you, Senator. Simply put, for highly classified information, you and your colleagues have proven time and again that you’re not to be trusted. So while there will be accountability and oversight, it’s going to happen later, when your babbling to the media can no longer endanger the lives of our foreign service officers.

I hope this helps, and I personally can't WAIT for 2016 when we can send your sorry ass back to Oshkosh.
