GAO Cannot Audit Federal Government, Cites Department Of Defense Problems

The Government Accountability Office said Thursday that it could not complete an audit of the federal government, pointing to serious problems with the Department of Defense.

Along with the Pentagon, the GAO cited the Department of Homeland Security as having problems so significant that it was impossible for investigators to audit it. The DHS got a qualified audit for fiscal year 2012, and is seeking an unqualified audit for 2013.

The report released by the GAO on Friday indicates serious accounting problems at two of the largest government agencies: the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security. The Department of Defense has a net cost of $799.1 billion to the federal budget, while the Department of Homeland Security has a net cost of $48.7 billion.

1. How much money is falling through the black hole in the DOD?

That must be the problem. That's how come we have to cut defense spending--there must be far too much money unaccounted for.

2. This is why we have deficit problems.

Defense and Homeland Security are out of control, literally out of control and unaccountable. Meanwhile, public school teachers are required to compete with each other for their jobs based on the test scores of their students.

If the Department of Defense and Homeland Security were required to account for their use of money based on their own performance and the performance of their employees, we could save a lot of waste. It would help balance the budget.

How much money was lost in Iraq?

3. +100000000

Shocking how many people here do not care about this. All we have been talking about in politics is the budget, but the pentagon spending was off limits and now they don't even have to account for how most of the money is spent.

Bush created the stupid ass department of Homeland Security which is almost as much as the education budget.

Why don't we end that bullshit right now? It would be the perfect time with all the budget problems, it should also make the teabaggers happy who pretend to care about the Constitution when it comes to Obamacare.
