Sen. Coburn: Debt Ceiling Breach Is 'a Wonderful Experiment' to Shut Down 'Stupid Things'

Economists like Nobel prize-winner Paul Krugman have warned that Republicans could "blow up the world economy" if they refuse to raise the nation's debt ceiling but Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) disagrees, saying that it could actually be a "wonderful experiment."

During a Tuesday interview with conservative talk show host Sandy Rios, Coburn insisted that only "stupid things" would be shut down if the the debt ceiling was not raised.

"Weíre going to collect $200 billion a month if in fact the government were to not extend the debt limit," he insisted. "Social Security would be paid, Medicare would be paid, the essentials would be paid; itís the non-essentials that wouldnít be paid, itís the $250-300 billion a year in stupid things we do that we wouldnít pay, itís the programs that arenít an absolute necessity that wouldnít get funded, the things that would be a necessity would get funded."

Coburn continued: "It might be a wonderful experiment, regardless who wins the next election or not, just to see if we could live on the money thatís coming into the Treasury and not have to borrow against the future of our children."

7. Experiment? It happened already and we know the outcome. It cost us the downgrade in our national

credit rating. That cost us in the amount we have to repay. Who doesn't know this? How can Coburn not?

8. I can think of a ton of stupid things that need to be cut out

Like the cadillac health care plan provided to Senator Coburn.

Or the subsidized travel provided to Senator Coburn.

Or the annual COLA's Senator Coburn receives while he campaigns to limit COLA's granted to federal employees and social security claimants.

Senator Coburn of course would never borrow against the future of his children.

11. If these things are so "stupid" the why can't congress decide on them. Because the stupid

don't know what stupid is. Is it - corporate welfare, oil subsidies, congressional perks?? I seriously think that senator Coburn should make a list of spending cuts and give it to the president for review. Let's see what he thinks is "stupid".

is any federal payment to Oklahoma - social security, medicare, unemployment, military pay and upkeep on any military bases in OK, etc, etc.

15. I hate it when manipulators pretend there's some other motivation...

...for their behavior than forcing someone to bend to their will.

Secondly, I hate it when someone is willing to hurt someone else to get what he wants, and that's what Coburn is advocating.

18. Coburn is an idiot, a bigot, and in charge of making hush money deals for the gang at K Street's

House of the Holy when they get too involved with extramarital subcommittee meetings. This loudmouthed fool ran for office on the 'there are lesbians in the bathrooms' platform and he's just gotten more backward and unreasonable since that intellectual highlight. Makes me ill. A wonderful experiment....
