If the US defaults.... taxpayers may not get their tax refunds.

Now this is a topic we should really push. Both red and blue state citizens will NOT like this.
Republicans will be in hot water if their constituents don't get their expected refund.

I've heard that before, like the last time this happened, but the politicians never explain how a separately funded system would be impacted.

SS isnt spending authorized by Congress, it isnt in the budget.
