Wife of former Rep. Jackson Jr. resigns from Chicago City Council

Wife of former Rep. Jackson Jr. resigns from Chicago City Council

(CNN) - The wife of former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., who stepped down amid health concerns and investigations into financial improprieties, is also resigning her seat in government.

Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson is stepping down from the City Council on January 15, she said in a letter to Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Friday. She has held the seat since 2007.

"As a representative of the people of the 7th Ward, I value the public trust which has been bestowed upon me and take my responsibility to safeguard the interests of my constituents seriously," she wrote. "Likewise, I am unapologetically a wife and a mother and I cannot deny my commitment to those most important personal responsibilities."

She said her decision came "after much consideration and while dealing with very painful family health matters."

1. Good for her. We don't need any royal familiies in America

whether their name is Bush, Kennedy, Rockefeller, or Jackson. Let each person that seeks office be judged on the merits of his or her ideas and the strength of their passion.

2. She has been missing lots of council and committee meetings.

I want to like her. But, she's not doing her job.

3. Poppycock. She resigned because she more likely had a role in the circumstances that brought down

her husband.

The newspapers reported in the days leading up to her husband's resignation that prosecutors had offered him a plea deal; he resign from Congress or they would indict his wife as well in the charges against him. Had she not played any part in the misappropriation of campaign funds, there is no way she would have gone along in the deal. If you're innocent, you're innocent. She's a lawyer. These people both graduated from law school.

I have no tolerance for corrupt politicians. Jesse Jackson Jr. had an opportunity to do something good for his community and instead he allowed himself to become corrupted. It was also reported in the newspapers that he was having an affair at the time all of this began coming to light and had brought his mistress a $40K watch. He then spends months hiding out at a hospital treatment facility before surfacing to face the music. Good riddance.
