1. It won't just be the GOP that will squeal

It will be the vast majority of Americans, and Democrats could kiss goodbye any hopes for holding power for a decade or more.

Stupidest idea ever.

4. Why?

It will be the Republicans' fault for not raising the ceiling. They'll take the fall.

5. I don't even know what to say...

How, precisely, does one "shut down" the military? Have ships at sea just sit idly in the middle of the ocean, crewed by sailors who aren't being paid? Tell the vendors who supply our installations around the world with every thing from military hardware to powered eggs that we're not going to pay the bills any more? And is the Coast Guard just going to tell ships in distress that they'll just have to swim for it because the President it trying to make a point with Congress.

2. I suppose they could TRY to pass a bill with THEIR priorities, but it's standard practice

to pay salaries first in any case of bankruptcy, and I believe that theory would also apply to the
Gov't and SS check, food subsidies, etc. The problem I see is that if the treasury dept. has been using all their tricks for a while to be able to continue gov't operations, it won't take long to reach a time when NOTHING can be paid!

3. I would not touch salaries and benefits

but payments to weapons contractors? Yes, they don't get paid until it is raised.
