Log Cabin Republicans Criticize Chuck Hagel's Gay Rights Record In Full-Page Ad

Hagel recently apologized, saying his 1998 remarks were "insensitive." Hormel has said the former senator's remarks seemed politically timed but accepted them as a "clear apology."

The Log Cabin Republicans' ad says Hagel's apology is "too little, too late," and includes a timeline of the senator's record on gay rights. It points out that in 1996, he said he would have voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibits federal recognition of same-sex marriages. In 1999, he also said he opposed repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the ban on openly gay men and women serving in the military that was repealed in 2010.

The group's stance against Hagel appears to be far stricter than it was against GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, whom it endorsed in the presidential race. Romney also opposed same-sex marriage and took hardline positions against gay rights during his campaign.

1. In 1999, didn't ALL Republicans vote for DADT????

And yet the Log Cabin Republicans continued to vote for them. No?

They knew Bush and Cheney's stance on these issues and they still voted for THEM.

But NOW those votes matter to them. Interesting.

8. It was 1993 and not all voted for it

some voted against it because they wanted an outright ban.

23. And did the Log Cabin Republicans not support those same Republicans?

I'm trying to understand why one would take the Log Cabin republicans seriously in their opposition to Hagel when they seem pretty willing to support other Republicans who have taken far more outrages positions on equal rights for gays.

24. I don't know if they supported them or not

I don't know which Senators did it. McCain did it as did Helms.

25. Well, the name suggests that they supported Republicans, like Bush and Cheney, no?

And Bush and Cheney defended DADT and DOMA.

The point that I, and now many others in this thread are making, is that LCRs lack any credibility in the discussion of Hagel.

29. Supported Bush in 2000, supported McCain in 2008, supported Mitt in 2012.

Not endorsing Bush in 2004 is not the same opposing him either.

They are opposing Hagel.

Interesting article on this ... apparently they opposed Romney in 2008, then supported him in 2012.

http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2012/10/23/1071511/log-cabin-republicans-endorse-romney-despite-previously-criticizing-his-anti-lgbt-record/

Again, they have ZERO credibility.

28. DADT was actually an improvement over the ban that was current at the time.

It is much maligned and yes it was terribly flawed, but at the time it was an attempt to stop witch hunts and to lift a total ban. It was a step forward at the time when the subject was considered very controversial. Newly elected President Clinton at first tried to just overturn the ban but got slapped back by Colin Powell and others. Having no military credentials to his name, he deferred to their judgment. In retrospect, not the optimum choice, but he was trying to do the right thing against great odds.

2. I don't understand why the LCRs are complaining

about something Hagel said years ago while they still vote for other Republicans who continue to express the same or worse opinions. I don't get those people at all.

3. This is nothing but a Smoke screen.

It's all about protecting the Military-Industrial-Complex from the major cuts that will take place in the next two years. The big six media groups along with the Punditocracy are trying to control the news cycle. Were do you think the budget cuts are going to come from, nobody in their right mind is going to touch the third rail. You touch Social Security programs your toast and the Rethugs know this.

5. I'm confused.

They're gay REPUBLICANS and they're bashing someone for making anti-gay remarks?

Doesn't the fact that they're part of the party that blatantly disses gays at every turn sort of negate their ability to comment?

11. Interesting

that the Log Cabin Republicans only seem to ever attack Democrats or Democratic nominees over their gay rights record while always conveniently ignoring the constant "in-your-face" bigotry and hostility towards any pro-gay rights legislation/policies by Republicans. I don't know of any elected Republicans whom support same-sex marriage, almost all of them voted to preserve DADT in 2010 (after initially filibustering repeal), and then a Democratic President nominates a former Republican Senator who made some anti-gay remarks (that he has since apologized for) and NOW they're upset?

They weren't concerned about Romney being anti-gay just a few months ago but they're dead set against Chuck Hagel because he was on the wrong side of history nearly two decades ago????????
