Carmona Considering Ariz. Governor Run

By Scott Bland // January 3, 2013 | 10:33 a.m.

2012 Democratic Senate nominee and former U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona is considering a 2014 gubernatorial bid in Arizona, he told the Arizona Capitol Times Wednesday.

Carmona told the newspaper that numerous donors and other supporters have contacted him to urge him to mount another statewide bid. From the Capitol Times:

ďIím being inundated by offers of support, of money, of organization, both from Washington and here in the state,Ē Carmona told the Arizona Capitol Times. ďIíve still got an open mind on everything. I never intended to run for Senate, but people all over suggested I give it a try. I donít want to rule anything out right now, but Iíll just keep considering all my options.Ē

Carmona said heíll need at least a few months to think about the race and isnít sure when heíll make a decision. Sources familiar with his plans said he will likely make a decision during the second quarter of 2013.

Carmona's considerations remain vague at this point, but the Democrats egging him on believe that he can improve on his 46 percent showing against GOP Sen.-elect Jeff Flake in November. But midterm turnout levels could be a substantial obstacle for Carmona (or any other Democrat who runs). According to exit polls, Carmona won 36 percent of white voters and 72 percent of Latinos in 2012. Those are virtually identical to 2010 Democratic gubernatorial nominee Terry Goddard's exit poll numbers from the last midterm. But because Democratic-leaning minority groups turned out at lower rates in the midterm year, Goddard got blown away by GOP Gov. Jan Brewer.

1. I don't know of a better candidate.

There are no statewide office holders here so our 'bench' is sorta limited. For the most part he ran a good campaign for the Senate so he has that experience.

2. If Arizona has had Democratic Governors in the past

and most recently Janet Napolitano it should be a matter of mounting a good campaign. Those elections were all midterm elections too.

3. When are Dems going to take midterms seriously? Brewer has got to go.
