Maddowblog - "Political hostage taking should never be normalized" - Great Take

The problem with the false equivalency that the corporate media uses to cover up for Republicans is that it hides the truly outrageous and disgraceful conduct of Republicans. Republicans are actively threatening to bring the United States economy to ruin unless they get their way. And, it is apparently okay, because Democrats are just as bad. All parties are "villains" as CNN Gloria Borger columnist wrote in a column today. Thus, the corporate media portrays itself as being objective and above the fray by portraying a false equivalency between Democrats trying to protect Medicare, Social Security, Education and Infrastructure funding, and Republicans threatening to tank the Nation's credit rating unless we leave the rich alone.

http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2013/01/03/16330009-political-hostage-taking-should-never-be-normalized?lite

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) freely admits, without a hint of shame or regret, that he intends to hold the debt ceiling hostage until Democrats accept deep cuts in social insurance programs like Social Security and Medicare. Indeed, McConnell yesterday urged Democrats to act quickly, "rather than waiting until the last minute."

That's right, Mitch McConnell isn't just planning to hold the nation's economy hostage, he's already complaining about the speed with which Democrats will pay the ransom.

It's not just McConnell, of course. Every member of the congressional Republican leadership in both chambers is saying the same thing: President Obama may not want to negotiate over the debt ceiling, but as far as the GOP is concerned, the president doesn't have "any choice."

How many Republicans are standing up to say this is wrong and that their party shouldn't deliberately put the global economy at risk? So far, zero.

The best thing the voter can do is vote these GOP bums out of office 2014!

4. They have "cards to play"

it is fucking insidious.

These jackasses are threatening to ONCE AGAIN downgrade the country's bond rating, and the media universally refers to it as "playing their cards" to normalize it.

If Democrats were pulling this shit it would be declared TREASONOUS and there would be no limit to the negative framing they would face.

Watching Morning Joe for the 7 minutes I could stand it, and everyone back slappingly agreeing that the problem with no deals is the President's fault for not having members of congress over for tea and crumpets. Not that republicans are extremist jackasses, but it somehow is the President who Mitch McConnell publically said the party's primary goal was to make him a one term president, or the President that these jackasses scream LIAR at during the SOTU address, it is THIS Presidents fault republicans are running around DC like a bunch of butt hurt 5 year olds.

This in between Scarborough for the 1,000th time dismissing HIM as thin skinned.

6. The Problem Is That Corporate Media's False Equivalency Narrative...

...insists that Democrats are always equally wrong. Gloria Borger of CNN wrote a column saying that Democrats are liberals are just as much "villains" as Republicans. Until the media calls these threatened acts of economic terrorism for what they are, Republicans will be emboldened to plunge our Nation into default.

5. I'm sorry but the attitude from the Rs is the reason I think the President should have let us

go off the cliff. Because if the Rs don't care about the debt ceiling, shutting down gov't, risking a tank in the economy, and a downgrade then going over the cliff may have been an easier way of negotiating those tax rates with those Rs.

An upside of not doing that is that the president didn't have increased tax rates on everybody and if the Rs want to hold this country's economy hostage then they for sure will get the blame if and when the economy tanks, etc. because the responsible business leaders will not want this again.

7. Surprise! Surprise!! SURPRISE!!!

This is what happens when you "negotiate" with such people. Even the first time was grievously foolhardy because the time to limit the damage is early. Indulging this shit is insane.
