From the U.S. Senate to the ER in one afternoon

Don't try this at home, boys and girls. I have been running on empty for a few days, now, but there was so much stuff I wanted to do. I was invited to a few swearing in receptions at the U.S. Senate today, for 3 Democratic women I had supported during the campaign.

No too slick. I collapsed in Sen. McCaskill's office and was brought to the Senate infirmary in a wheelchair, and then by ambulance to Georgetown U Hospital. No big problems, but they did suggest I get a good night's sleep. I had to ask what's that.

But before my system gave out, here are some pics from Capitol Hill today. It was a GOOD day for Democrats in the Senate.

With newly minted Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawai'i:

My brother and me with surprisingly re-elected Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri.

EVERYONE dropped by there. Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer, the two Davids (Axelrod and Simas) and look who else!!

I missed Sen. Heitkamp of ND as I was being transported to the ER. Can't have everything, right?

14. By the way, Sen. Hirono said something very interesting

She said a lot of her contributions and other support came from Texas. I guess we have pretty much thrown in the towel on the Senatorial level, and a lot of us have donated our time and efforts to electing Senators from States where we at least had a chance (and WHO thought Heidi Heitkamp had a chance in North Dakota?). What a frigging shame that it has come to this in Texas.

You have done a wonderful job. It's been a grueling campaign season and you worked yourself to death. Now go on a vacation and get some much needed relaxation and rest. Listen to your favorite music, read those books you've set aside, get some healthy but low-impact exercise...like walks on the beach at sunrise and sunset. Catch up on your journal. Take care of yourself!

I got the invite when he found out I personally knocked on 200 doors in the Billings area and I was one of Sen Cantwells constituents...Testor ask me why I wasn't working on Cantwells campaign and I said it wasn't as exciting as his when he was running against Conrad Burns.

72. OMG.....you're the only other person I've "heard" say that! Bro!

I LOATHE beer! And the smell of it makes me want to retch. In the olden days when I threw parties where people would come and drink, drink, drink....including beer....the smell the next morning when I arose was enough to turn me green.

I went to Europe when I was teen on a kind of outward bound trip -- an older, very brave couple who were Outward Bound leader veterans took 19 male & female teenagers on an incredible trip to Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Germany and a couple of other countries. 80% of it was spent hiking, climbing & camping but we also did some other stuff. When I think back on it, one of the curious things we did was tour one of the German beer factories. And yes, there were samples for the teens! A friend looked at me when we were on the tour and said, "I swear, you look green!" I felt green -- I was incredibly nauseous the entire time we were in that factory -- getting outside never felt better! (And boy, did a few of those teen boys love that tour & sampling the product!)

(I also happen to hate wings, hot or otherwise, so the whole prescription is one sure to finish me off and incite further gasps.)

And we're not perverse.....it's the people who drink that nasty shit who are the sickos!

(Oh, and great day and great post. We all wish we could go to Capital Hill and stand out and you actually did it! Okay, by lying down but dang.....it's memorable! Hope you're listening & getting some rest -- we can push our bodies just so far and then they have a tendency to let us know we're out on a very thin limb and better climb down, at least to a sturdier limb nearer the trunk. Thanks for sharing those great pix!)

73. There is life out there!

I thought my wife and I were the only ones on the planet. Even our daughters think we're weird.

My latest distinguishing of myself was not exactly my finest hour up there. Even Howard Dean called me yesterday, saying "This in the Capitol Ambulance Service informing you that we have a nine gazillion dollar bill coming your way for services rendered last week," or something like that. I was laughing so hard, I didn't catch it all. It's easier to laugh at with a bit of distance in between, believe me.

And nope, you're not alone on the beer.....though we're, indeed, a rare breed! (I also hate guns -- yeah, I really fit in here in the South. How the hell did I end up moving from the Northeast to N.C., of all places? At least I headed for a semi-liberal haven in NC but still....WTF?! Hell -- I can't really complain to a lefty who lives in Texas!)

62. I'm trying!

My brother likes Greek food, and his wife is from Japan. I'm sure there are people who like salsa on their egg rolls, too.

I'm currently on the train to New York to meet my wife, who is coming down from visiting a girlfriend in northern Vermont.
If it weren't for that, I would have stayed on with my brother in northern Virginia for an extra day. For the first time ever, I hired a porter to help me with my luggage, which is considerable, as I am in the States for a few weeks. As my luggage was heavy and bulky, and the porter looked forlorn and lonely sitting there at Union Station, I tipped him $20. I think it must have been more than the norm, because the guy said he'd call up to New York and have his counterpart meet me at the train when it arrived! LOL!! But I'm still a bit weak from the incident, and will gladly give the guy's pal the same in NY if he'll get my stuff to a taxi. I'm sure these guys can use it more than I can. If it's more than what one customarily gives these guys, well good for them.

But I figure these poor guys probably make between $100 and $200 a day in tips if they are lucky. If I made this guy's day by increasing that by somewhere between 5% and 10%, I'm happy to do it. Maybe his Christmas wasn't so merry.

As for taking care of myself, in less (I hope) than 2 hours, I'll be in NYC meeting up with my wife, and having her around is usuallyvery good medicine for me:

I'm sorry your won't see Helen Thomas, but she understands. Just relax a bit and thanks again for the beautiful pix. All of your pix give the feeling of being there.

I don't think you should get out in the cold for the 21st in D.C., although it should be an epic celebration. Watch it on teevee.

57. Boy, I'm getting a little weak-kneed just looking at the talent you're hob-nobbing with!

How exciting -- and well deserved -- for you! So sorry you took a dive

Rest up, take care, and you'll be back for more. And I'm sure Helen understands.

59. DFW

I'm a relative new comer here... but I remember some wonderful things you posted about Helen Thomas when she was under the gun.

So sorry you had to cancel... but taking care of yourself is a priority.

Hope you're feeling better soon!!

And I'll treat you to some yummy coffee at Stella's next time you're in Denver!! <g>

65. DFW, I thank you. Now, please get some rest so that

you can continue the quest in 2014, and beyond.

Your family, like mine, may suggest we "go into the dark night in good health", yet, how realistic is that?

67. How realistic?

About as realistic as expecting that the Kochs will donate their entire fortune to cancer research and then live out their days in poverty as Buddhist monks!

69. On the mend. We're now thinking it was the flu.

I sweated out a gallon that night, and my sister in law, with whom I was staying, did, too a couple of days later. If it strikes, lay down, suffer, and just wait for it to be over.

70. Wouldn't surprise me.

I was traveling last week to D.C. and was feeling woozy from all the running around just from the minor cold I had.
I do always get my flu shot.

I ate a steak at the Capital Grille for the first time, by the way.

71. If it's the one on Conn. Ave. near Dupont Circle

That's where I introduced H&H a couple of years ago.

Decent food, although steak has been on my no-no list for almost 10 years now.
