John McCain: GOP Will Destroy America’s Solvency Unless Entitlements Are Cut Drastically

By Josh Israel posted from ThinkProgress Economy on Jan 1, 2013 at 10:20 am

In an interview Monday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) confirmed that Congressional Republicans plan again to use the upcoming debt limit to hold the nation hostage to their demands for massive cuts to Medicare and Social Security. His comments echoed earlier remarks by Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC) and anti-government activist Grover Norquist.

Raising the debt ceiling does not mean spending more money — it merely allows the administration to take out the necessary debt to pay for the spending already authorized by Congress and the interest on the debt that has already been approved by Congresses past. While the nation reached the current debt limit yesterday, the Department of the Treasury is using accounting measures to keep the government from default for the next couple of months.

But McCain told CNN that Republicans would again block legislation to keep the nation from defaulting on its obligations, unless they can force major cuts to vital entitlement programs — even though doing so would be highly unpopular:

WOLF BLITZER (HOST): Are you going to use the raising of the debt ceiling in February or March, Senator McCain, as leverage to get what you want from the president?

McCAIN: I think there’s gonna be a whole new field of battle when the debt ceiling rolls around. Most of us have pledged that we’re gonna have to… before we vote again to address the debt ceiling — even though it may be at great political cost — we’ve got to address spending, and that means entitlements. We’ve got to sit down together and get us back on a path… look, we just added, what was it, $2.1 trillion in the last increase in the debt ceiling, and spending continues to go up. I think there’s gonna be a pretty big showdown the next time around when we go to the debt .

2. He should be reminded again and again...

where the majority of that debt came from and who was president at the time.

They are so good at building the debt and then screaming that the Dems haven't paid the bills.

What a hypocrite!!!

9. And this is from a man who, all his life, was living off government funds

Yes, all due respect for his tormented days in Vietnam but still, he moved from the military to politics, never having to worry about retirements or living from paycheck to paycheck.

14. No more free passes for his service!

Just a little history...Benedict Arnold served this country with honor, until he felt he was slighted...and then he betrayed America out of spite and for personal gain.

Something that Johnny boy seems to doing now...the only difference is that he's not selling us out to another country, he's just selling us out...and it's for nothing more then political gain for him and his girlfriend Lindsey.

11. It's time for him to retire

His desperation for relevance is beyond put if control and he really seems to be getting worse every time he opens his mouth. Just wish he would go away already.

13. Amazing comment considering he wants to cut social security and Medicare in a state

That has a large senior population who voted for him. Mcslime the poor loser should resign. Him and his boyfriend Lindsey should both quit. I see little Lindsey has become ms tea bagger so he can get re-elected. I so wish someone would out him big time.
