Ran into a nutty today...

It was fascinating to get a look into the mind of these crackpots. Overheard while in the doctor's office waiting room.

1) Obama was responsible for Newtown in a plot by the UN to take our guns. Apparently, he sent in a special agent to do the killing and that there is no evidence of Adam Lanza ever committing the shootings. He has no problem killing children because he's an abortionist. She said she read this online today. I haven't been able to find the article.

2) Obama stole the election through the Black Panthers. She has a friend who lives in Ohio who wasn't allowed to vote because she was white. She said they somehow blocked white voters from voting and this is why he carried Ohio.

3) Obama had Ambassador Chris Stevens killed because they were engaged in a gay love affair and Stevens wanted to go public with it.

4) Obama will circumvent the constitution, possibly through Sharia Law (she really said this) so that he could run for a third term in 2016.

5) If he decides not to run for a 3rd term, Hillary will run and win - then appoint Obama as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court so that both can influence American politics long after their presidencies are over.

I mean, I've heard some nuttery before. But this shit ... this shit was insane.

Those are all things my 72 year old Mother in Law is constantly fretting over....She gets these notions at her beauty shop where she does the "blue hair treatment" to ladies her own age,who all tell each other this CRAP,while faux noose blares away in the back ground.....She gets it from her wild eyed, blubbering, rabid teabag sister, who herself gets,on absolute authority, from the pastor in the little "snake handler" type church she attends......

Of course, he'd have to be appointed by the current President and confirmed by the Senate, and--the biggest problem in this case--there would have to be a vacancy.

But before and just after Obama was first elected in 'O8, he'd slide up beside me at work as he looked around to make sure the coast was clear while asking under his breath "did'ja see this???"... and he'd hand me a sheet of paper where he had printed out an email "fwd" from one of his right wing buddies of some lunatic Obama conspiracy shit... just like that womans. He actually believed this shit his nutbag nazi friends were sending him. I swear this was at least once a week. I've never had the pleasure or pain of meeting someone like this, but I've come to believe the best thing to do is to enthusiastically agree with them and then feed them even wilder BS. Just to see how far they'll go before they say, "That's crazy!" I'd love to see where the line is with these loons. Of course, if they come back to you and ask you to repeat said BS to a friend, you must at that point look at them like you have no idea who they are or what they're talking about. If they confront you again later about the denial, you can just say that "They" were watching and listening at the time and you couldn't speak freely.

including elected politicians and RW media.

LW conspiracy theories never became mainstream during the Bush era, they were pretty much confined to obscure blogs.

In fact I think Rove and Beck got their ideas from Alex Jones and other conspiracy blogs and decided to blast the airwaves with them so that no one (or at least the Repub base) would know what was true or false any more.

And it worked. A little too well.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/1022291
Mother Jones article - http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/10/chart-obama-conspiracy-theories

See http://www.democraticunderground.com/1022291#post4 for some Obama is gay theories compiled by The Nation magazine. Just one excerpt to whet salacious appetites --
... conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi, one of the original Swift Boaters, who interviewed a man who knew Obama at Occidental and described the future president’s relationship with his roommate as a “close, intimate emotional attachment,” even though the only evidence for that attachment was the fact that “I saw them standing very close to one another.” Or a blogger named Kevin DuJan, who reports that Reggie Love, the former basketball player who served as Obama’s “body man,” was actually the president’s lover, and that it is “quite clear that in the years ahead Barack Obama will replace Elton John as the reigning party queen, gay icon.” (DuJan also says he expects that Obama will retire to Honolulu after his defeat by Romney, where, “draped in colorful muumuus, with a retinue of hunky shirtless Secret Service studs around him, Barack Obama will find himself in a new kind of paradise no doubt.”)

Chicago is the main, maybe only, reason Illinois is not a red state....

Colorado Springs, bad as it is/was and being on the Front Range,is a world away from the west slope....The Springs are just over an hour drive down I-25 from Denver,a huge blue haven....The western towns like Grand Junction,Montrose-Delta area, where I was,are more isolated little pockets where the teabag anti gov sentiments prevail...I moved away 2 years ago and am unaware that things have improved...None of the people I stay in touch with, from back there, have indicated that....When the subject is broached at all,in phone conversations,it sounds to me that no changes for the better have occurred.....Being dependant on the major industries of ranching,oil/gas fields and coal mines doesn't appear to be conducive to changing any attitudes,either...

I laughed, loudly, and she looked at me angrily. Everyone else in the waiting room looked absolutely horrified. She was telling this all to a woman she was with, so, I can only assume the person has heard it before. It looked like maybe it was her daughter, or maybe a live-in nurse? I don't know. The woman was in her 60s and the woman she was with in her mid-30s it looked like.

I generally confront people who ramble like that ... but I was so blown away by what she was saying, I didn't know where to begin.

Oh, and I found the article I mentioned in the 1st point about the UN and Obama being responsible for Newtown:

My crazy-ass, conspiracy-is-everywhere brother-in-law CONSTANTLY sends me links to that excremental site. He is one of those people who have never met a conspiracy they can't be convinced is 100% true - even when they directly contradict other whacked out theories. Check that....I should NOT do those idiots the honor of calling what they spew as "theory". We need to start calling it exactly what it is - paranoid rantings of dangerously unstable minds.

I am not sure how much the correlation is possible, but by calling things conspiracy "theories" we give added credence to those on the right who LOVE to attack science and scientific theories as being "just a theory" (ie. - no better than those crazies you all know who talk about black UN helicopters and Bigfoot)...WND is a chief peddler of nonsense and paranoia on the interwebs and should be identified only as a site of the crazy, by the crazy and for the crazy!!!

77. In my experience, most people who suffer from mental illness tend to trend

heavily left-wing, if only b/c they have suffered mightily and thus can understand and empathize with any who also suffer.

My subjective experience is borne out by objective history also, it appears:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Lewis_Moore

That story brought tears to my eyes when I read it.

78. That is sad.

At least he died for a cause, although obviously he shouldn't have.

I would say overall, in my limited experience, from what I could tell out of a pool of 15-20 people, most probably were left. There were two hard right, an Army major retired and a born again Christian.

daily, among supposedly educated adults. The few who hadn't drunk the Koolaid were mostly the working class African-Americans.

80. Every country has their share of crazies

it's just that the crazies here in the US have a lot of platforms to voice their craziness - Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and all the RW radio idiots, and a lot of the newspapers across the country.

68. All the conspiracy theorist sites are running with #1

Check out Godlike Productions or Lunatic Outpost, as just two examples where the fools think Israeli death squads really killed all those kids OR MkUltra brainwashed Lanza into murder.

OR- the kids were all kidnapped. OR- the parents are all actors and actresses pretending, and no kids died at all.

Crazy town.

...Bill Clinton was going to turn over the country to the Red Chinese Army in the role of UN Peacekeepers.

All these years late, and the only people on my street with blue helmets are the cable repair guys, and they're not even Chinese.
