Sen. Michael Crapo, R.-Idaho, was arrested in Virginia early Sunday morning for driving under the influence, Alexandria police say.

Police spokesman Craig T. Fifer said an officer was on routine patrol when he saw Sen. Crapo's vehicle run a red light. It was stopped at Hume Avenue and Mount Vernon at 12:45 a.m.

Crapo then underwent several field sobriety tests, which he failed, Fifer said in a statement. He was then taken into custody without incident.

UPDATE : Crapo has released a statement addressing the incident. From Politico:

"I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance," Crapo said. "I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter.

"I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated."

It's not like someone spiked your drink at a Frat party or something. You Sir are an alcoholic and a con man. Nobody starts drinking at age 61. You have been living a lie for a very long time and just now got caught. You ran a red light and could have killed someone. If that police officer hadn't been there to witness it, you might have gotten away with it this time only to repeat it again.

You are a liar and con man, as is your entire political party. We are tired of hypocrits like you who tell the rest of us how we should live our lives, while the life you live is one big lie. Do your nation a favor and resign and go home where you have no one to answer to but your family and your church. Perhaps, your church who appointed you a Bishop at age 31 will be more forgiving. But than that's another story.

Idaho Sen. Michael Crapo is a strict social and fiscal conservative (whatever that means these days: Tax the poor, give corporations taxpayer money, and scream about loose women using contraception combined with bizarre beliefs about the female body). He’s a Mormon who has told the press that he doesn’t drink. And he was arrested for a DUI in Virginia early Sunday morning.

The Senator ran a red light, prompting police to pull him over, whereupon he failed sobriety tests. His blood alcohol level was .11. (Virginia has strict DUI laws.) After being arrested, Crapo was released on a $1,000 bail. His license will probably be suspended for 7 days as per the law in Virginia.
