Female Senator Makes History With New Position

Barbara Mikulski To Chair Senate Appropriations Committee, Becoming First Woman In Top Spot

WASHINGTON -- Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski is set to become the first woman to chair the prestigious Senate Appropriations Committee, a position left open this week by the death of Hawaii Sen. Daniel Inouye.

A Democrat, Mikulski was first elected to the Senate in 1986 after serving 10 years in the House. Last year, she became the longest-serving woman in Senate history.

With her ascendancy to the chairmanship of Appropriations, she enters a male-dominated realm that in the past has had sweeping power in deciding how federal dollars will be dispersed around the country.

"It is especially gratifying to be the first woman to lead this powerful committee," the 76-year-old lawmaker said in a statement. "I am grateful for this opportunity to fight for the day-to-day needs of the American people and the long-range needs of the nation."

Senate Democrats are expected to vote Thursday to make her appointment official.

4. I have long thought Mikulski is our best Democratic Senator

She is one of the handful to have the courage and vision to vote against both the repeal of Glass Steagall and against the Iraq War Resolution.

I've always wondered how different the 2000 election might have turned out if Gore had taken Bill Clinton's advice and chosen the socially gifted and politically gifted Barbara Mikulski instead of the dull and unlikeable Lieberman as VP. She would have made mincemeat out of Cheney in VP debate, and the Country would have respected her intelligence and wanted to hug her at the same time.

She knows so much about the government, she is really going to be informed about where money needs to be appropriated and where not, it is just awesome that she is being given this position.

10. How many women are in the Senate now?

I remember before the '92 election ("The Year of the Woman"), there were only two female senators: Mikulski (D-MD) and Kassebaum (R-KS). There wasn't even a separate bathroom for women outside the Senate chamber (just one restroom with a sign which said "Senators Only" on it).

How many female senators will there be when the new Congress convenes in January 2013?

11. Currently 17 (2012). There will be 20 female senators in The Senate in 2013. See below

Women senators for the 113th Congress

Edited to add...
IF the Alaskan Governor appoints Hanabusa to the late Senator Inouye's seat then there will be an additional woman bringing the total for 2013 to twenty-one.
