... If not today, then when? ... I hope that President Obama was listening to the cries outside his window ... I feel encouraged by his words that we should take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics. But if we dont turn those words into a real discussion and real results, well all have failed our kids ...

House Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) told POLITICO Friday that if President Obama fails to act on gun control in the wake of the tragic shootings in Connecticut, she would have no problem embarrassing everybody in the administration into action.
McCarthy said before the election, she had spoken with White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew about the issue and told him, Jack, I know the president is going through an election and Im telling you after the election Im coming out full force. According to McCarthy, after the Connecticut incident, the gloves are off and she plans to do everything she possibly can to strengthen our gun control laws ...
The death of her husband and son in a mass shooting in 1993 was the impetus for McCarthy to join Congress fifteen years ago.

(23,370 posts)Pro-gun rights forces are accused (sorry for passive voice, but it IS abounding) of being callous for advocating for gun rights at this time of tragedy, yet the anti-gun forces are launching a political offensive. That's how politics works, and it does not stop ever: you attempt to win.
As for Democrats and progressives, there are anti- and pro-gun forces and I hope that they continue to collaborate and politically coexist. We cannot afford further division in the face of our true enemies.
