(ETA 12:16am ET) Reuters reports that Sen. Marco Rubio has endorsed Mitt Romney for president. See Freepers crying here.
(original post, based on an Alan Colmes blog post)
Florida Senator Marco Rubio might know something, as he appears to put a lid on speculation.
Im not going to be the vice presidential nominee, but Im always flattered when people bring it up, I think they mean it as a compliment, Rubio said on MSNBC.

Well...given that Romney and Santorum are both trailing Obama by 10+ pct in recent polls, there goes the chance for a handsome 40-year-old running mate in the event of a brokered convention. I wonder how the arguments over Chris Christie or anyone else as a running mate are going in the Republican boss boardroom.

(34,857 posts)...four years later. It just doesn't happen.
Edwards was competitive in '08, but consistently found himself third behind Clinton & Obama.
Lieberman gained zero traction in '04.
Quayle was in and out of the race remarkably fast in '00 (and he actually WAS a VP).
Kemp didn't run again.
Bentsen didn't run again.
Ferraro didn't run again.
Dole is the last losing VP candidate who actually made it to the general and that didn't happen for 20 years (well not counting Mondale, who, like Quayle, was a VP - why the Dems felt the need to nominate a guy who was VP to what many considered a failed presidency is beyond me).
So, there is nothing gained by any of these Republicans unless they're convinced Romney will win.

(32,015 posts)I don't know if you forgot or intentionally did not want to mention the shark who pretty much handed the election to Obama.
And there have been cases where the Vice President lost as the front runner: Humphrey in 1968 and Gore in 2000 (let's save an argument about Florida/the Supreme Court for another time).
But you are definitely right.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)Another one.
I think FDR was the last losing VP candidate to win the presidency - as he and Cox lost to Warren G. Harding in 1920. And he wouldn't run for president again for another 12 years.

Rubio saying this means absolutely nothing.

(7,596 posts)What the hell is up with that? The endorsement of George Herbert Walker Bush, a former PRESIDENT, didn't warrant this kind of attention. I'm sick of this overrated pretty boy already.

(27,711 posts)Most of the more well regarded female Republicans are going to look at him as a dead man walking. A few to consider in no particular order: Gov. Susana Martinez of New Mexico, Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson of Texas.
Romney needs a someone with government experience from the South or the West. Palin was a massive failure of vetting, but all four of those have acceptable conservative records, can appeal to the base, and aren't total muppets in the Republican world.
I think that makes me sharper than Steve Schmidt

(27,711 posts)...he'd wear a hood to speak at a Klan convention if he thought it'd help him win.

(27,787 posts)Haley is totally unknown and the SC Tea Party is angry at her.
No way do they go back to Alaska for a VP nominee.
Kay is too old ... its why McCain skipped over her, she was a much better choice than Palin ... now she's irrelevant.
Romney will struggle to win New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. Martinez might help him there.
Plus, he's going to assume that the insane states that voted for Santorum have no where else to go and so he'll win those by default.
Romney could focus on PA, Mich, IN, IL, and Martenez camps out in the lower mid-west. Lieberman will again campaign against Obama, focusing on Florida.

(27,711 posts)Throughout American history the job has often gone to an "elder" member of the party.
Martinez is kinda an unknown quantity on the national stage. Haley is known, but now has scandal problems.
Murkowski is capable, Palin was not.
Lieberman is irrelevant.
Either way, Romney has a big problem with women and he's not going to get around it picking an old white man.
Maybe he goes with Rick Perry.
