Senate Republicans publicly repudiate Bob Dole

I am a lifelong, proud Democrat. But, even though I have a lot of friends who are Republicans, Iím glad Iím not a member of todayís Republican Party. Because todayís Republican Party is just too damned mean.

Just look what they did to Bob Dole yesterday. Over the years, Doleís one of the Republicans Iíve admired the most and grown close to. Heís an American war hero. Heís a true patriot. He was an outstanding senator from Kansas. He was a very fair and effective majority leader of the Senate. Heís a wonderful, warm, funny human being. But what his fellow Republicans did to him yesterday is shameful.

As one who triumphed over his own war injuries, Bob Dole has long championed the rights of the disabled. Yesterday, fresh out of Walter Reed Hospital, he came to the Senate in his wheelchair to seek the support of his fellow Republicans for the United Nations Disabilities Treaty ó which would not make any changes to American law, but merely encourage other nations to grant disabled persons the same opportunities they enjoy here in the United States.

One by one, his Republican colleagues walked up to shake his hand ó and then stabbed him in the back. Only eight Republicans joined all Senate Democrats in voting for the treaty, even though itís already been endorsed by 155 other nations. Opponents argued that endorsing the treaty would undermine national security, thereby branding Sen. Dole as some kind of traitor or terrorist.

1. Clearest sign yet that this isn't your dad's Republican party.

Today it's a malicious, paranoid cult.

2. i used to think republicans would take candy from a baby so they could have more candy themselves

but it turns out they would take candy from a baby just to deprive the baby.

in this case, disabled vets lose, and absolutely no one gains. american sovereignty is not the slightest bit strengthened by this action. in fact, all it does is get the world even more pissed at us, which in the long run works against us in many ways.

but to republicans, disabled vets are just babies wanting candy, and republicans can't help themselves from saying "no".

3. Absolutely disgusting. Party affiliation differences aside Mr. Dole is a well respected american.

A true patriot who has stood by those with disabilities. The Rs should truly be embarassed.

4. This is one of those times...

When the registered voters of the Republican party need to take a stand and make some noise. I too would be embarrassed to be a Republican after this vote.
