Data Shows Trump is Hurting The Store

Last edited Thu Nov 29, 2012, 02:11 PM - Edit history (1)

http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-is-hurting-macys-2012-11

"On Tuesday, Macy's CMO Martine Reardon said the reason the store will not drop licensor Donald Trump, despite his bizarre allegations that President Obama might not be American, is because Macy's listens more closely to its shoppers than to the media. (Or to online petitions calling for Macy's to drop Trump.)

She might want to listen again. New data from YouGov BrandIndex shows Macy's approval rating among women over 18 has plunged dramatically in recent weeks. Now, it's even below that of troubled discount giant JCPenney."

Reputation matters and people have long , long memories......

2. MACYS is an overpriced dump now anyway.

It is nothing like what it use to be. After the competition from Gimbels and Bambergers left their quality went down and their prices went up. There was a time they actually competed with each other and the shopper won.

Trump is a fitting symbol of their lowbrow and overinflated present day status. I stopped shopping there a long time ago.

3. Years to build

In the retail world, reputations take years to build, and a minute to destroy. One would think Macy's would be a bit more careful.

5. In the last YouGov I gave a thumbs down to Macy's

Of course, they won't listen to men about that. And there really isn't any reason to as I think it is geared more towards women buyers. The women in the marriage are the ones that usually do the cooking, use the appliances, and maintain the furniture. So of course, their opinion and decision is more important. Why should I decide what type of refrigerator or stove should be purchased when I may not be using it as much? The man can help weigh the differences and make suggestions but should also listen to the woman as to what might be best.

I'm wondering which stores have women as their top customers and which ones have them nearly the same? And I'm wondering how clothing sales match up between women and men department?

10. Women are responsible for about 80% of household spending..............

so if you are a retailer there is no other big block of people you want to piss off.

18. I didn't know it was that high...

but thought it was higher than men as the woman is the person mainly responsible in the family. Then add in the single women.

The Vultures are probably feeding now and borrowing money, couple lawsuits to add to the final profits.

However, I will only use them as a cut-through from the parking lot on the way to the food court, henceforth!!

23. I thought that's all a Macy's was anyway.

Until now I didn't know that stuff was for sale. I thought it was some weird avant-garde art project aimed at the people that were entering the mall. A "Behold The Capitalist Thoroughfare!" sort of thing.

12. Women have to look

at the men in their lives....they buy their clothes and most dress them. IRL, it seems that only gay men know how to dress. A generalization, I know....but that's what I see in MY life.

Most straight men look like they dress in the dark. Just my experience.

30. Alot of men rely on their wives and girlfriends to buy them clothes

So if women are seeing Macy's in a negative light that means they might be going elsewhere to buy clothes for their husband/partners.

17. From what I've seen when I've shopped at Macy's, there aren't many to lose their jobs...

...trying to find a sales clerk in Macy's is like being in some lonesome prairie at night with only crickets for company. You can wander through half the women's wear and never see a sale's clerk. And when you do, there's only one manning a register. Good luck if you want or need any help--because that one poor clerk is busy with a line of people because she is the only sales person in sight. As you can well imagine, the sales people at Macy's haven't much enthusiasm for their jobs.

So, sadly, yes, because of this people will lose their jobs, but not many. Macy's has shamefully been cutting corners for years. Not only are their sales people few and run-down--and I've no doubt underpaid--but so are the stores. Not well kept-up, looking old and tired.

Nordstrom's, on the other hand, has mastered the art of making the customer feel like a queen. Step into any department and someone will be at your elbow asking if they can help you find anything. And they know what is in their department as well--and where it is. And the store itself is sparkling and polished. I can't speak for their politics, but they demonstrate the opposite philosophy. Rather than relying on name-people to lure in customers (like Trump) while neglecting service and environment, they went for good service and an inviting environment.

20. This on top of the fact that Macy's CEO (Terry Lundgren) is on the "Fix the Debt" list....

...meaning he's part of the campaign spending $30 million dollars to make sure they get their deficit reduction deal rammed through during this lame duck session of congress (see here). That's the one where they argue that the poor have to sacrifice more--including Medicare, etc. to repair the deficit rather than having any of them or their companies pay more (or any) taxes.

Any wonder they want to keep Trump as a spokesperson? He seems to represent them aptly. And I hope he does such a good job making shoppers turn away from Macy's that Lundgren is blamed for the idea and fired.

21. Let's just say that if I worked at Macy's . . .

I would be worried long term, and planning for another job search. Lundgren will be the downfall of the company because he and his Court got greedy. How many people did they put out of work over the last 10 or so years? How many stores did they gobble up? Federated, or what we now call Macy's Inc. is no different from Romney and Bain.

Just my opinion.

27. Just another chapter in the CEO's are Stupid book.

First off CEO's like poor conservatives vote against their interest. Secondly they make stupid decisions to cut labor to the point that customer service suffers. Then when they lose sales they cut labor even more and customer service suffers, so they cut labor more then they are out of business and can't figure out why.

28. I can easily say i spend about $2-5k a year in that store

Yes maybe I'm the ultimate consumer and I do like to shop. Last 2 years I haven't been buying as much.

But I won't be spending a dime there again as long as Macy's keeps hyping that racist asshole.

I've been doing more shopping at JCP. When the religious nuts targetted them for using Ellen DeGeneres I thought I should help support them.

31. Hope you have told/will tell the PTB at Macy's that....

they need to hear it from their dedicated customers. I suspect there are few who can claim spending $2-5k a year anywhere but on their house/car payments! Certainly not in the recession economy, at least. You withdrawing your shopping dollars and those like you would have a huge impact, particularly if you call out the CEO for being the moron she is!

33. You'd be suprised

I mean to be honest there is not much difference between Macy's and places like Target or Wal-Mart. Sure the latter have grocery/drugstore offerings but outside of that they are pretty much the same. Except Macy's is just a nicer place to shop. Spending even $2k a year isn't that hard knowing that any new clothes, shoes and most of my makeup/skin care come from Macys. And if you have a family and shop there that number is easy to reach.
