16. Isn't that why Mitt's having lunch today?

The president, acting magnanimously will offer that position to ol' Willard, minus the car top carrier of course!

5. I think Obama's playing the appointment out strategically and in a cagey fashion.

The rethugs are playing rope-a-dope with Rice, but Obama's too smart to get snookered by these rank amateurs. I believe he wants to appoint Kerry to one of two posts, but knows that the Senate's too close and too important to create a vacancy that Scotty boy could waltz into - which is the rethug's wet dream these last few days. I think Hagel would be qualified for SOS - and he'd have to toe the Obama Administration line. It would burnish his credentials and I think he'd relish the job. I don't see him in another post, but I may be myopic about this. I could see Obama appointing someone like Wes Clark to SecDef or CIA. I'm sure there're others qualified. And is the SecDef position even up for fulfillment now? And don't rule out the fact that Hillary Clinton might be prevailed upon to continue in the role of SOS. I think she may have dreams of rest, respite and a run for the presidency (a rather daunting challenge for someone who'll be about 70 in four years), but she might be convinced to stay the course to keep the status quo. (BTW, I think it's Bill who relishes a Hillary presidency more than she does now. Just my opinion, but my hunch is that she's not committed to a run for that office in 2016).

11. Clinton, Paneta, possibly Holder, & probably others will be replaced after the first of the year

so there will be lots of vetting going on between now and then before any of the positions are vacant and before we hear who President Obama will be appointing.

12. He needs to be given a free lunch and thea ticket back to Nebraska.

We don't need another Betraeus on our watch. If Chuck Hagel wants to be employed there are several Walmarts in OMaha that need greeters.

15. My "guess" is that Kerry will turn down SecDef and has said as much to Obama.

So my guess is that Hagel is in line for that job.

The guy who has taken over for Petraeus at CIA sounds like he is very good. I don't know why Obama wouldn't keep him on...

18. I think the head of the V.A. He has a decent long history with our veterans needs.

The 4 year upgrade to the VA Obama started (everything was on paper files!) needs a strong leader to keep the upgrade moving foward. Hagle backed the long battle for more agent orange medical help that President Obama started. He's a Vietnam Vet with a very good record.

plus he shares the Kennedy,Obama portie dog love so he can't be all bad

wonder if General Powell is considered for any admin positions. Remember reading the president and Powell speak frequently.

19. Probably CIA, but i hope its SoS.

Hagel is one of the last foreign policy realists left, and with his experience and knowledge of foreign policy he could probably help us reach out to countries that we consider to be "enemies", whether real or imaginary, like Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea etc... That's something that has disappointed me about Obama's first term. He said he'd meet with any of these leaders without preconditions, but its never happened. Maybe Hagel could nudge us in that direction, since we still have a ways to go on the foreign policy front.
