Is anyone else reminded of how movies portray hacking with that Anonymous "statement"?

Because it sounds pretty absurd and reminds me of just that, in Hollywood how hacking is usually portrayed as playing a video game of some type and if you win you get access. Except that's not even remotely close to how it is in reality. I'm not even a hacker and I could see some flaws in it. It reminds me a lot of a certain scene from the latest James Bond movie which makes for great entertainment but is also impossible in reality.

For example the bit about "leaving the barn door open". What type of "door" are they referring to here? A password protected connection? So one that's either not encrypted at all or has a very weak password. Seems a little suspicious for this type of system. And then the talk about "digital tunnels". That reminds me of Ted Stevens' "series of tubes" comment, we all know the internet and computer networks do not work that way. The closest thing would be a bunch of VPNs that only allow connections to a certain segment through that VPN. But then the talk about how they tried to make it look like there were more than there actually was. Well putting up a bunch of hoax VPNs that led to nothing useful is not only odd for someone who supposedly has a very weak connection to their system but also implausible, if you can access the network enough to put on a firewall preventing communication you can also view where packets are going and where the activity is. A decoy VPN would be easily identifiable.

I've yet to hear anyone with any type of IT background think what they described is even remotely plausible. If anyone can I'm willing to listen, but so far anyone defending the Anonymous statement seems to rely only stating that Rove is some type of Bond villain evil genius instead of the bumbling fool he appears to be over the last couple of years, not to mention that the Republicans have struck out three out of the last four elections. Any diabolical election rigging system they have still appears to not be working well. Especially since in this instance even if the diabolical scheme had succeeded Obama would've won anyway without Ohio.

1. Yes, but that one time it did work leaves me wondering.....

....how different our world of today might have been if Al Gore had been elected. Because of that, I can't let Rove off so easily for having just been a bumbling fool.

Vigilance seems to be the pancreas for the future. Or am I misunderstanding the thesis of your OP?

3. It's more about the implausible technical description of Anonymous' statement

Like I said, it sounds like the type of "hacking" described in it is the Hollywood version rather than anything remotely resembling how IT actually works. "Digital tunnels" isn't too far off from "series of tubes" just for starters.

12. "tunnels" = VPN.

Networks often use the term of "tunneling" when referring to VPN. No relation to "tubes".

2. All I want is a general technical description of how it could be plausible

For all the sound and fury coming from the Anonymous Saved It crowd, I have yet to hear even a single description of this kind.

Indeed, the Anonymous Saved It crowd seems to specialize in explaining why such a technical description cannot possibly be proffered. It's ridiculous. "There's no explaining the ways of God to men," or something.

4. The best way to understand the bullshit Anon-Rove story is to watch this film

It really illustrates how belief and wanting to believe something supercedes reality.
People tend to look for and contort ANYTHING to evidence and prop up what they already think:

&feature=g-vrec

Another way to understand this new CT is to follow the story to its origins and look for the donate button.

There is a lot of money in bullshit. Chariots of the Gods has earned $7 million dollars!!

6. Well the original statement is too so I'm not surprised

Really the fact that so many were willing to believe this makes me wonder if some loon a couple months ago started screaming for Romney's birth certificate if he'd have some supporters here. Believing anything you read on the Internet because it's against someone you don't like is a big trait of the Birthers et al.

11. Every computer is hackable that should be a given.

Every new computer, every system, all new programs there are clever people banging away at them. It is possible some local Gov, State even parts of a Federal elections could be hacked/ or cheated. That's why I think our Vote should be out of state/local control.
