Ken Burns: Trump Camp’s Playbook ‘Is Out of the National Socialist Party in Germany’

Ken Burns: Trump Camp’s Playbook ‘Is Out of the National Socialist Party in Germany’
by Josh Feldman October 21st

Historical filmmaker Ken Burns had a pretty blunt assessment of Donald Trump‘s campaign tactics in an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour this week.

“I don’t recognize my country anymore,” he said. “This is so terrifying. I think this is an existential moment for the United States of America. I think this is the greatest threat since the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Second World War for how we’re going to be and what kind of people we want to be.”

Amanpour brought up what someone wrote about Trump’s “myth of rigging” the election and how it may have links to German propaganda in the 30s and 40s. Burns responded thusly:

“The Trump campaign is––their playbook is out of the National Socialist Party in Germany in every regard. The dog whistles of race and immigration.”

The far right has taken the nation down the rabbit hole of an alternate reality, where up is down, false is true, and a Mad Hairpiece is serving up a tea of mass delusion, switching positions all the time, making offensive personal remarks, and reciting nonsensical word salads.

All Trump`s enabling political supporters need to be held accountable for their winks, nods and willful lack of courage. What they were willing to do to this country for a perceived "win" is truly frightening.

We all need to be aware of this and inform others. I've replied in other posts with Steve Schmidt's comment that what happened in Germany in the 1930's was not because Fascism was strong, but because democracy was weak. Let's do all we can so this does not happen again.

12. Trump's rhetoric

Trump's rhetoric is often compared to that of the rise of Hitler, but it is actually closer to home than that. George Wallace used the same type language in his rise to power and after, often talking directly to the Klan about the Blacks.
Just before the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church that killed four black girls (Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, Cynthia Westley, Denise McNair) Wallace said this.

" What this country needs is a few first-class funerals," Wallace said," and some polical funerals, too."..

As noted in "The Lynching" by Laurence Leamer:
"Wallace enjoyed provoking his enemies, spewing rhetoric rarely heard in public life. In the end he always backed off, but in toying with words, he toyed with human lives. Words were action, and when he provoked people to do their fearful deeds, he was as much morally responsible as if he had struck the blow. planted the bomb, or shot the bullet."

I thought she was going to finish the thought: we'd have to have this huge law enforcement force rounding people up in their homes and in schools, at work and in the streets; we'd be loading them in busses and on trains.

They tried that once and it led to disaster (a proper use of Trump's favorite overused word). It was called Nazi Germany.

Why did she stop short?

I wish she had because we all already know she is more presidential.
She could really "tell it like it is" and not put a dent in her armor.

be vigilant to repudiate, as decent human beings, the hate this psychopath has brought into the open. . Many, many people living, born and raised here in america would love their own 21st century hitler. That is the most obvious point proved to me by this election season. And I still can't get it out of my memory how people were laughing at this dangerous psychopath during primary season saying he had no chance. This was the same thing that was said about "that little Austrian corporal".

I was not surprised. American society/citizenry has ALWAYS had a very hateful, mean and racist streak, citizenwise. Well I have had no problem returning the hate to people who are obvious trumpenfuhrer supporters with disdain and derision, openly, if they don't listen to their own heart and conscience. Very mean civil society these days and the whole world is watching. I think there will be fallout about our society and its presidential choices for quite a long time to come after this election.

Funny this came up, I just got his series on the Roosevelts and am going through it.

These alt right movements start with propoganda and misinformation...to get enough people to blame the wrong culprit for their woes. It is really the MI complex and the gilded set, the Banksters, etc but not when you listen to FOX and Rush, etc.. They work to convince you it is immigrants and a bevy of Welfare Queens.

We are at a crossroad to be sure. The good news is that young folks are turning away from cable, harder to brainwash.

Hillary is going to win. Then we'll see what happens after that.
